Newsletter Week 10

Year 5

It has been a very busy and eventful fortnight for the Year 5 students. This week, Year 5’s had the opportunity to attend the YMCA Discovery Camp in Anglesea.

The Year 5 students enjoyed an action-packed camp filled with exciting challenges, teamwork and adventure. Throughout the camp, students participated in a range of activities, including Bouldering, Mini Golf, Archery, Mountain Bike Riding, the Giant Swing, and the Vertical Challenge. Students showed great courage as they stepped outside their comfort zones, encouraged one another and developed their confidence while tackling new experiences.

In addition to the daytime activities, students enjoyed a variety of evening events that brought everyone together. The trivia night provided plenty of laughs and friendly competition, while movie night gave students the chance to relax and unwind after busy days of adventure. Camp was a fantastic opportunity for students to build friendships, demonstrate resilience, and create lasting memories that they will cherish for years to come.

Check out some of the student highlights from their experience at school camp:

Sophia M: I really enjoyed all of the activities at school camp. My favourite activity was the Giant Swing because I was able to swing from 18 metres in the air! I also enjoyed spending time with my friends in the cabins, we had many memorable moments.

Ringo D: I enjoyed camp because I could face my fears and build resilience. I am afraid of heights, but I was able to overcome this by going on the Giant Swing. My friends encouraged me and cheered me on so that it was easier for me to overcome my fear.

Literacy:  Students have been learning about natural disasters. Week 7, we explored cyclones. Students investigated Cyclone Tracy and the impact it had on Darwin, and how the author used similes, metaphors and personification to make the writing more interesting.

Numeracy:

Students explored probability. Some explored the likelihood of events occurring and categorised events that are certain and impossible. Others conducted chance experiments by rolling a six-sided dice and represented the results from a chance experiment in a data table. Some were extended to record the theoretical probability of an outcome, record the relative frequencies of outcomes and compare results between experiments.

Inquiry: During Inquiry, students investigated the alliances that Australia has with different countries. They discussed the importance of these alliances, located the countries on a map and compared them to alliances that they have.

Religion:

Students continued their learning about the 7 sacraments and their importance in the catholic church. Students identified what the sacrament is, its importance in the catholic church,  colours associated with the sacrament, the symbols, scripture readings and categories.

Year 6

Literacy

In Literacy this fortnight, Year 6 students have been continuing their class novel, Once, focusing on building their reading fluency, vocabulary, and summarisation skills using key words and conjunctions. Additionally, students have been developing their non-fiction writing skills by exploring the purpose and structure of information reports.

Numeracy

In Numeracy, Year 6 students have been continuing to look at probability by designing and running chance experiments. They have been making predictions, recording outcomes, and analysing relative frequencies to see how their results compare to expectations. Students reflected on their findings and were challenged by using critical thinking to modify game rules to alter the chances of winning.

Inquiry

In Inquiry, Year 6 students have been exploring the concepts of settlement and colonisation, specifically focusing on how these events impact populations, migration patterns, and the distribution of resources. As part of this unit, they are developing their own webquest to define key terms, research relevant images, and consider the perspectives and history of Indigenous and First Nations peoples. This will link wonderfully with some of the things students will see and learn about at camp next term.

Religion

Saints are examples for us of how to live a life filled with God’s Spirit. When we are Confirmed, we take a Saint’s name. The Saint we choose becomes a model for us in our life as followers of Jesus. Students who are preparing for the Sacrament of Confirmation have begun researching the Saint they have chosen as their Confirmation name. Other students have chosen to research a Saint or someone important to them who is an example of a Spirit-filled person.

Wellbeing 5/6: Students worked to create posters about how to be safe online.

Visit from Bishop Martin

Our Confirmation students were privileged to welcome Bishop Martin Ashe to our school. Bishop Martin spent time speaking with the students, sharing insights about the Sacrament of Confirmation and encouraging them as they continue their faith journey.

We thank Bishop Martin for his visit and for helping our students prepare for this important milestone in their spiritual lives.
