Year 1/2 News

It is hard to believe that the term is already over! It has been a wonderful term watching the children grow, learn, develop, and gain confidence in everything they do. We know that everyone is truly ready for a break, and we encourage you all to take some time to relax and enjoy being together.

The Year 1/2 Team would like to say thank you for your support this term and for working alongside us. Have a wonderful holiday break, and we look forward to seeing everyone back on Tuesday, 14th July!

Inquiry:

In Inquiry, we started looking at forces and how different items can be pushed and pulled. We got to explore different items and how they move. We also had our first incursion for the year! Thank you to Taskworks, who ran our incursion and brought many different things to help us explore science.

Taskworks Incursion

The students in 1/2 consolidated their understanding of push and pull through an exciting incursion from Taskworks. They enjoyed participating in a variety of hands-on activities that reinforced their learning in a fun and engaging way. It was fantastic to see the students so immersed in their learning and eagerly exploring the concepts provided.

A big thank you to Rebeka and Greg from Taskworks for helping us celebrate the end of our unit with such an enjoyable experience.

Literacy:

In Week 7, we explored several picture books by author and illustrator Jon Klassen. The books This Is Not My Hat and We Found a Hat were favourites among the students. We focused on how illustrations can provide clues and help readers understand what is happening in a story, even when the text does not explicitly explain it. Students enjoyed discussing the characters' actions, emotions, and intentions by closely examining the illustrations.

In Week 8, we began reading the book The Day the Crayons Quit. Students explored the characters' perspectives by putting themselves in the crayons' shoes and considering how each crayon might feel. Through class discussions, they developed their understanding of empathy and character emotions. Inspired by the book, students then began writing persuasive letters, using persuasive language and reasons to convince their audience of their point of view to end their learning for the term.

Maths:

In Mathematics, we have been exploring addition and subtraction. Students have been learning a variety of strategies to solve number problems, including number bonds, place value charts, partitioning, near doubles, and mental calculation strategies. We have used MAB blocks to support students' understanding of place value and number operations, helping them develop confidence when solving mathematical problems. Students have also been learning to recognise, create, and extend repeating patterns, including ABC, AAB, and other pattern sequences.

Religion:

In Religion, we have been learning about forgiveness and its importance in our daily lives. We explored the stories of Jesus Forgives Peter and The Parable of the Unforgiving Servant, discussing the messages they teach us about mercy, compassion, and reconciliation. Students made connections to their own experiences by reflecting on times when they forgave someone or when they were forgiven by others. In Week 8, we began learning about the stages of forgiveness.

We explored the stages of Acknowledging the Hurt, Letting Go of Retaliation, Praying for the Offender, and Seeking Reconciliation (when possible). Through class discussions and reflection activities, students developed a deeper understanding of how forgiveness can strengthen relationships and promote peace within our communities.
