Year 3/4 News

Wow! It is hard to believe that we have completed another productive school term. We are filled with pride at the accomplishments, growth, and memories made throughout the past few months. The students engaged in new learning experiences, made new friends, and embraced challenges with enthusiasm. They did a great job during their Learning Conversations and enjoyed the opportunity to showcase some learning they are extremely proud of, and discuss a learning goal they wish to achieve with their families.
Congratulations to our Year 4 students who made their First Eucharist at the
Community Mass last Sunday. It was a very reverant and prayerful celebration.
Year 3/4's had fun coming to school very relaxed
wearing their PJ's on Wednesday...an easy day to get up
& ready for school.
Congrats to our Year 3/4 basketball teams who competed in the Wyndham Hoop Time competition. The students represented our school with pride & competed with great sportsmanship. Both OLSC teams ended up competing against each other in the final. Well done to all & thanks to Michelle & Fan who took our students.
As a Year 3/4 team we would like to thank you for your support this term and wish all a happy and safe break. We look forward to seeing you back at school on Tuesday July 14th
Wellbeing
In Wellbeing Hour, the students explored how to take ownership of their choices, and actions and skills required to actively solve problems. They identified the actions that can be controlled and actions that were out of their control. This included a particular focus on the ownership of both. You may like to have your child discuss these actions at home and how they can show responsibility.
Year 3
Religion
During weeks 7 & 8 we are continuing to explore parts of the Mass and the connection with prayer, students have written prayers of praise and petition. Watch out for their Rip-n-Stick about the Eucharist.
Literacy
In weeks 7 & 8 the Year 3 students have continued to explore our class novel ‘Matilda’, we are excited for the coming weeks as we will compare the written text with the original movie. When reflecting on the characters and the events that have happened, students have responded by drawing pictures and recording their responses.
Maths
We have been learning about length, how to measure length and what is an effective strategy for measuring. A highlight was last Thursday when we participated in a measurement scavenger hunt. It was great to see how excited and engaged they were in searching for the items to measure.
Inquiry
We are continuing to explore Australia’s history and the impact of our Indigenous peoples. Students are continuing to develop their understanding when completing their visual responses.
Year 4
Religion
In Religion, the students have been developing understandings on a unit called the Year of Matthew. They learned how to identify key healing miracles in Matthew as signs of Jesus' compassion and influence. They used a graphic organiser table chart to help them analyse each miracle. This involved identifying and responding to questions that included; who was involved and what they were doing, how Jesus responded, how the crowds responded, the scripture reference, and the title.
Literacy
The students recently completed a study on a book called The Wild Robot. They had the opportunity to watch the movie and later compared this with the book. This involved examining the characters and setting, plot and changes, imagination and artistic medium used, and personal choice on how they felt about both. The students used a ‘Mind Map’ organiser to record their understandings, and this displayed the robot character from the book and the movie involved. They also continued following the PhOrMeS program to strengthen their word reading, spelling, and overall language learning skills.
In literacy last week the students read the book Dear, Broccoli about a boy Frank who does not like eating broccoli. So he started to write letters to him complaining and saying why he doesn't like broccoli. Broccoli the starters relying on him trying to persuade him to try and eat him and that he is good for him. The students then needed to create a brainstorm of their least favourite food and come up with reasons why they don't like that food. From their brainstorm the students then wrote their own letters to their chosen food pleading for them to go away. Once they had written their letters the students needed to create a counter letter from their food back to them.
Maths
The students concluded a unit called Length and Area by completing a creative activity where they had to apply the skills they had learned. This involved creating a robot on grid paper, and calculating the area and perimeter of the regular shapes used. Some students went further by calculating the total area of their robot. The unit that followed was called Data Representation. This involved the students comparing graphs, evaluating graphical displays of data, and describing the shape of distributions in data displays.
Inquiry
The students continued to follow the ‘OLSC Design Process’ in a unit called Design Technologies. They used collaboration in groups to ideate, design, prototype, and evaluate a solution to a problem at school or in their classroom. The students will have the opportunity to showcase their problem solving designs to the other Year 4 students in a gallery walk later on this term.

There were so many amazing designs that addressed many issues that the students see across the school. Well done to all the students for their amazing work creating their prototypes.
