Foundation Scientists – Growing Seeds! 🌱🔬

This semester, our Foundation students have been busy becoming young scientists as part of our Science learning in Humanities. Over the past few weeks, we have been investigating plants and discovering how seeds grow and what they need to survive.

We began by learning that plants need things such as water, sunlight and soil to help them grow. This led us to an important scientific question: Can a seed grow without soil?

To find out, we conducted our very own experiment! We placed seeds inside snap-lock bags with wet paper towel instead of soil and hung them up in our classrooms. Over the following weeks, the students carefully observed the seeds and watched for any changes.

To our excitement, most of our seeds sprouted! We could see roots beginning to grow and shoots emerging from the seeds. Some seeds, however, weren't quite as successful and didn't sprout at all.

From our observations, we discovered that seeds can begin to grow without soil, as long as they have enough moisture. We also wondered whether our results might have been even better during a warmer and sunnier time of year rather than in the middle of a chilly Miners Rest winter!

It has been wonderful to see our Foundation scientists making predictions, observing changes and using their findings to learn more about the amazing way plants grow. 🌱

Year One News

In Year One, we have been conducting lots of hands on problem solving tasks for Maths! We have had a blast using water to measure the capacity of different containers. We have discovered that we need to carefully predict the capacity by looking at the shape of containers, as the taller one won't necessarily hold more than a shorter one!

We also paired up with our new buddy class, M2, on Monday morning to have our first social squad activity for Term 3. We completed a task about how we can fill other people's buckets in support of Bullying No Way week!
