Year 10 OED Rail Trail Camp

The Year 10 Outdoor Education class travelled to the High Country by bus then rode along the Great Victorian Rail Trail from Mansfield to Bonnie Doon. 

Students learnt about the Indigenous and non-Indigenous connections with the land including cultural burning practises, agriculture, tourism and conserving the vital wetlands.

Under the guidance of expert volunteers, students were shown through the Yea wetlands that holds environmental significance for large numbers of birdlife, small marsupials, and flora. Students had camera access to nesting boxes that contained small brush-tailed possums. After seasonal rainfall, the wetlands were alive with damselfly insects and frogs.

Chloe P reflected: I really enjoyed camp as it gave me a chance to connect with different people, create new friendships and learn about the natural environment and different ways it is used. Camp pushed me outside of my comfort zone and gave me a chance to experience something new and create many new memories.

Samuel L reflected: I learned about the history of the Rail Trail, the native flora and fauna and the Yea wetlands. I also learned about the attractions and history that brings tourists to and through Mansfield.
