Peace Posters

A huge thank you to Karina Nicholson (mum to Lucy and Jessica) and to the Warrandyte Uniting Church for organising the Together as One Peace Poster Display. A huge amount of work went into displaying each poster beautifully, judging the work, and arranging the very many fabulous prizes. The culmination of the display and the awarding of prizes took place at Warrandyte Uniting Church on Sunday 25th October. It was a wonderful afternoon of our Warrandyte community coming together and great to see so many Andersons Creek families there.

All of our students participated in creating a poster during art classes, which were then entered into the competition. Karina said, "It has been wonderful to see children express messages of peace, kindness, and togetherness through their creative voices.  It was a wonderful opportunity for the children to see their work showcased within the community and celebrate the creativity of young people from across the region".

The Uniting Church received more than 450 entries from a wide range of groups and age levels, and every poster was thoughtful, creative, and inspiring. A huge congratulations to the great number of our students from our school who were awarded a prize of some level (Winner, Runner-Up, or Honourable Mention.) The generous prizes were cash and art packs. Well done to all our students for participating and creating your poster of peace.

Preps

Students began this term with rolling a clay slab and creating a name plaque. They pressed various objects into their clay to make patterns. The clay is drying and will be bisque fired in our kiln once fully dry. Students will then glaze their clay before the second firing.

Next in art class, they looked at the art area of printing and drew two large flowers. The students traced these flowers onto printing foam. Using the foam and printing ink, they printed their flowers in a variety of warm colours. Students used paint and bubble wrap to take a print for their background. Once their flowers had dried, students cut them out and glued them to their background. They added stems and leaves, and some glittery glue to make their flowers sparkle.

Grade 1 & 2

Students completed their dragonfly wire models early this term. They painted backgrounds, collaged on stalks and leaves, and used magiclay around their dragonfly body. Once finished, their dragonfly was glued to their background and hung up for display.

Students have begun working on a water lily collage, inspired by Claude Monet. They will also be making handmade paper later this term.

Grade 3 & 4

Students began term 4 with modelling clay into pinch pots. They smoothed their clay pot into a bell shape and modelled a clay ringer to go with it. Their clay was kept in plastic to prevent it from drying out for the following week, when they used a technique called sgraffito to decorate their work. Sgraffito is a decorative art technique where an artist scratches or carves away a top layer of material to reveal a contrasting underlying layer (in our case the clay itself.) The clay is currently drying and will be bisque fired once it is fully dry. Students will then add a gloss glaze over the top to make their colours brighter and shiny, and the work will be fired a second time. After that, students will add string to join their ringer and bell together for a Christmas bell.

With inspiration from Van Gogh's paintings of chairs (his own simple chair and the more elaborate chair of his friend, Gaugin, as shown here), we constructed and drew our own chair artwork. Students added design to their floor and walls, and the next week can add colour using pencils and watercolour paints.

Here are some examples of their work thus far.

Following from this, students rolled a clay slab and made a clay cylinder. The following week they could apply glaze, the sgraffito technique and tissue transfer to their work. Sgraffito is a decorative art technique where an artist scratches or carves away a top layer of material to reveal a contrasting underlying layer (in our case the clay itself.) The clay will be bisque fired once fully dried, then a gloss glaze applied, then the final firing.
