Grade 5 and 6

Welcome to Term 4!
Welcome back to all of our students, families, and community members for the final term of the school year! Term 4 is always an action-packed, exciting, and rewarding time as we consolidate a year’s worth of learning, celebrate student growth, and prepare for end-of-year milestones. We look forward to a busy and fun-filled term ahead!
Grade 5 Explores Notable Australians Through Biography Writing
This term, our Grade 5 students have been diving deep into the world of non-fiction and biography writing, researching some of Australia’s most remarkable, inspiring, and unique historical and contemporary figures.
To launch our unit, we posed a provocative question to the class: “If Australia were to issue a brand-new $75 banknote, who should be featured on it?”
This spark led to engaging classroom discussions about who currently appears on Australian currency, why those individuals were chosen, and what makes a person’s contribution significant enough to be immortalized on our bank notes.
Along the way, students uncovered some fascinating history! Did you know that Mary Reibey, the iconic face on our $20 note, was arrested in England as a teenager for horse stealing (while disguised as a boy) before being transported to New South Wales in 1792? She went on to become one of Sydney’s most successful business leaders and philanthropists—proving that history is full of colorful stories.
Building on these insights, students have selected diverse figures to research and write comprehensive biographies about. Classroom subjects include:
- Nancy Wake – The legendary WWII resistance fighter known as the "White Mouse."
- Steve Irwin – The passionate wildlife warrior and conservationist.
- Ash Barty – Tennis champion and inspiring role model.
- John Farnham – The iconic voice of Australian music.
...along with many other notable scientists, leaders, athletes, and trailblazers!
Through this unit, Grade 5 writers are honing their skills in note-taking, logical structuring, historical empathy, and engaging non-fiction writing. We look forward to sharing some of their completed biographies with the community soon!
Grade 6 Reflects with Personal Autobiographies
Meanwhile, our Grade 6 students are turning the lens on themselves as they begin creating their very own autobiographies.
As their primary school journey at ACPS draws to a close, students are taking time to reflect on their years here while looking ahead to the exciting next step in their education.
Through year-by-year stories, favorite memories, and personal milestones, students are capturing their unique ACPS memories. They are working hard to compile these stories into a final written keepsake that will be published at the end of the year—a wonderful reminder of their time, growth, and friendships at Andersons Creek Primary School.
Mapping and Solving in Maths: Algebra & Cartesian Planes
In Mathematics, Senior School students have been expanding their algebraic thinking and spatial reasoning as they dive into Algebra and Cartesian Planes.
Students are learning how to decode unknown variables, construct algebraic equations, and plot ordered pairs (x, y) across four quadrants on grid coordinate systems. Through hands-on problem solving, students are discovering how algebra and graphing connect to real-world applications like mapping, navigation, coding, and data tracking.
It has been fantastic to see their confidence grow as they unravel complex mathematical patterns and formulas! - Even better to use this Maths to play Battleships!
A Big Thank You to Maddy!
We would like to extend a huge thank you to Maddy for all her incredible support working alongside our Grade 6 students over the past four weeks. Her dedication, energy, and assistance have made a wonderful difference in our classrooms and cohort. Maddy, we can't wait for you to be back at ACPS in the future.
