Preparing for the Grade 2 Sleepover

As we write this newsletter article there is growing excitement about the Grade 2 sleep over. As part of our camp program, the grade 2's get to sleep the night at school and the grade 1's spend extra time at school, enjoying dinner with the grade 2's before heading home. Our preps also enjoy sharing afternoon tea at school. Throughout the day we will have Professor Bunsen visit and show us some science experiments in line with our inquiry unit this term. This camp program helps to support our junior students to get ready for camp in grade 3.

In preparation for our special event, the grade 1's and 2's have spent time creating Space themed decorations to put up in the classrooms as we learn about our solar system. Grade 2's have made a mobil of our solar system have also been preparing their pillowcases in anticipation of the big night

Literacy

The Grade 1 and 2 students have continued to build their reading skills this term. One of the ways that they are doing this is through reading with a partner and sharing a text together. Paired fluency reading helps students to hear how their peers are reading as well as themselves. In this way they are able to reflect each other's speed and expression. Another way is to share their own writing with the class. It is lovely to see the growth in confidence and the pride in which our students share their work.

Maths

In Grade 1 we have covered a few different topics so far this term. The first was graphing where we revised what a tally mark was and then we surveyed our class members on a question of choice. These included favourite colour, animal, sport and ice cream flavour. The results were then calculated and drawn up as a graph. The students quickly identified which was the most popular and least favourite.

After graphing we were working on weight and capacity. Students were able to estimate how heavy things were and how much containers could hold. They sorted them from lightest to heaviest then each item was weighed to get the actual results. There was lovely discussions about why their results were different to their first estimate. We also predicted how many cups of water a variety of containers would hold. The students had so much fun checking the answers and playing in the water. Lucky it was a warm day.

Grade 2's have revisited time, learning to tell time on an analogue clock to the quarter hour, learnt about location and direction and and started working on fractions 1/2, 1/4, 1/8 and more.

Cricket clinic

It was a lovely sunny day when the Warrandyte Cricket club sent some representatives to run a cricket clinic for the students. Everyone had a chance to bowl and bat. They learnt to aim for a target and which side of the cricket bat works best to hit the ball with.
