Music at St Virgil’s College has enjoyed a vibrant and rewarding start to the year, with students embracing opportunities to grow, perform, and share their talents. From lively rehearsals to excursions and inspiring classroom moments, it has been wonderful to see such enthusiasm and creativity flourish across all year levels.
As Easter approaches, we look forward to continuing this momentum while also taking a moment to pause. We hope that over the Easter break, our students and their families are able to find time for rest, reflection, and the simple joy of being together.
Senior Music Class Workshop
It was a pleasure to host Dr Andrew Legg from UTAS in the Senior Music classes last week. Dr Legg came to the Senior Campus to do a workshop with our students studying the University Connections Music Foundations Course, Ayaan Jafery and Enoch Ebo. Ayaan and Enoch are the second cohort of our students to be admitted to the Music Foundations course.
Dr Legg led the workshop where Ayaan performed Breed by Nirvana on guitar and Enoch sang Issues by Julia Michaels. Ayaan and Enoch performed well and listened to advice from Dr Legg regarding practice, assessment preparation, and improving instrumental and vocal technique. Dr Legg was also able to answer questions from students in the Music Studies 2 and Music 3 classes.
Grade 5 and Grade 6 Bands
The Grade 5 Band has taken a significant step in their musical development with their debut performance earlier this week. The students have been learning and rehearsing for only six weeks, so this performance is a big achievement for the group. As we are so close to Easter, there was only one choice for music at the Junior School Assembly: Hot Cross Buns. We look forward to future performances from the Grade 5 Band.
Please remind your son to make sure that he brings his instrument and practice sheet to school on Mondays for rehearsals. It has been noticed that a few students have not been consistent in ensuring they have everything they need for rehearsals and tutorials.
I will be asking for all students in Grade 5 and Grade 6 to hand their practice sheets in at the final rehearsal for Term 1. Please assist your son in filling in the sheet accurately and bringing this sheet to rehearsal. New practice sheets will be handed out to students at the start of Term 2.
Bandsman of the Week
Students who are named as Bandsman of the Week demonstrate exemplary behaviour during rehearsals and tutorials, bring all of the necessary equipment on Mondays (instrument, music folder, and practice sheet), and have demonstrated a dedicated home practice schedule. Congratulations to George Everard in Grade 5 and Max Free in Grade 6 for being recognised as Bandsman of the Week.
Private Music Lessons; Term 2
It is fantastic to see so many students taking Private Music Lessons at St Virgil’s College. Private lessons are available at both the Junior and Senior Campuses for the following instruments:
Please note that private lessons are only available for piano for students from Prep to Grade 2. Please contact our Music Administration Assistant, Mr Jamie Pregnell (jpregnell@stvirgils.tas.edu.au), for further information regarding private lessons.
