Read Around the World Read Challenge
This term in Wide Reading, we have been doing a reading challenge called ‘Read Around the World’. Students have each received a ‘Reading Passport’ which has been accompanying them on their journey of reading 5 books, from 5 different countries and from 5 different genres that we have in the Library. For each book that they finish, they write a review and then get their passport stamped, receive a raffle ticket in the draw for one of 10 prizes and get to place a pin in the world map! A bonus ticket can also be secured by reading books from different continents and Tanja and I have been recommending books based on the continent that they are set on. Surprisingly, we have found quite a few books for Antarctica!
There are four more weeks remaining for students to get their book finished and passports filled and we can’t wait to see what they read next!
One week until Book Week!
Not long now until Book Week is upon us! The theme is ‘Symphony of Stories’ and we have an action-packed week planned - see the posters below for all of the exciting details. Most importantly, the Book Character Costume Parade is on Wednesday the 26th so make sure to get your costume ready (they don’t have to incorporate the theme so get creative)!
Staff Book Club
Our first book club read of Term 3 was Stan Grant’s Talking To My Country. What a spectacular book. Grant’s distinctive and powerful voice came through so strongly and made for a compelling non fiction read that flowed so beautifully. It also, of course, gave us lots to unpack in our meeting! We discussed how the book echoed the speech that Stan Grant made for the IQ2 Racism Debate, almost ten years ago but still strikingly relevant - well worth a watch if you haven’t seen it before. We also reflected on how moving it was to listen to Archie Roach’s music while reading, particularly during Part Seven in which Grant contemplates the impact Archie’s music has had on him throughout his life. We have a few of his other books in the Library and I'm very much looking forward to reading them as well!
