Chicago: Teen Edition

Our production of Chicago: Teen Edition painted the town for four sold-out, spectacular shows, immersing audiences in a world of greed, corruption, violence, exploitation, adultery, and treachery, all with fitting musical panache. The incredible cast, crew and band - with the unwavering support of our teachers - put in a mammoth effort to make the show the smashing success it was. From day one to closing night, everyone put in their all to bring the world of 1920s Chicago to life. Opening Night launched the show on its three-day journey after a speech and a sing-along (a time-honoured tradition), followed by our Gala Night, which invited the audience to dress up for the occasion in their Jazz Age finest. Saturday’s matinee show starred our wonderful alternate leads, before our fourth and final show gave us Year 11s and 12s their school production curtain call – with our 12s taking their bows for a final time at Thornbury. 

I want to give a huge hand to everyone involved – and especially to Ms. Dowlin, Mr. Morison, Ms. Duyker, Vic, Sean, Jules, and Fi, for giving all of us the amazing opportunity to perform this show together. I couldn’t have wished for a better final production.

Thornbury High school had the honour of bringing the spectacular musical CHICAGO right to people's door steps. After many months of hard work, it was truly surreal to hear the suave tunes from the band, to see the glow of the theatre lights shining down, and feel the buzzing excitement backstage. Despite the hiccups, falling curtains and stress, everyone played their part beautifully whether that was on stage, up in the lighting box, amongst the audience, or backstage and I was truly blown away by the talent of so many students who now I exchange greetings and smiles with around the yard. 

If I could narrow down this journey to one highlight it would have to be the adrenaline surge during the closing night bows that was the beginning of an hour of theatre kid tears. None of this would have been possible without the guidance and commitment from all the teachers and staff involved, and what a joy it was to make such lovely memories with the soon to be graduates of 2026 who will be missed incredibly.
