OUTDOOR EDUCATION

YEAR 9

This week, our Year 9 Outdoor Education students embarked on their first overnight expedition, taking on the challenge of hiking from KSC to Kardella along the Great Southern Rail Trail. Carrying everything they needed in their packs, students spent a night immersed in the outdoors, putting their developing skills to the test.

Throughout the term, students have been building their camp craft knowledge, and this experience provided the perfect opportunity to apply it in a real-world setting. Despite encountering all four seasons in just 24 hours, students demonstrated resilience and adaptability as they learned how to pack effectively, prepare nutritious meals using trangia stoves, set up tents, and work collaboratively as a team. Hiking 20 kilometres with full packs proved both demanding and rewarding.

Beyond the physical challenge, the expedition offered valuable time for students to connect with their peers outside the classroom, appreciate their local environment, and experience the benefits of outdoor adventure. It was a powerful reminder that meaningful and memorable adventures can be found right in our own backyard.
