UNIT 3 BIOLGOY - EXPLORE INSULIN PRODUCTION AT GTAC

Our Unit 3 Biology students recently visited the Gene Technology Access Centre (GTAC) for an exciting, hands-on learning experience exploring how science is used to produce insulin.

During the workshop, students investigated the process of gene cloning and its vital role in creating human insulin for the treatment of diabetes. They worked directly with DNA and modern biotechnology techniques, gaining valuable insight into real-world scientific practices.

As part of the experience, students inserted genes into bacteria, enabling the microorganisms to produce specific proteins — including a fluorescent green marker used to identify successful gene transfer. They then grew and analysed the bacteria to determine whether their experiments had been successful.

This immersive laboratory experience allowed students to connect classroom theory with practical application, while building essential skills and understanding for Unit 3 Biology. It was a valuable opportunity to see how biotechnology is used to address real-world medical challenges.
