Significant Individuals & events that led to Federation (1900-2000)

Students will be using primary and secondary sources of information to explore continuity and change as they learn about significant individuals and events in Australia between 1900-2000. They will examine primary sources such as photographs, government policies, and personal accounts to explore Australia’s development as a nation. Students will learn about significant events including Australian Federation, women’s suffrage, the 1967 Referendum, migration experiences, changing citizenships and rights, and contributions and experiences of Indigenous Australians.

Students will construct timelines to identify key dates, examine photos, oral histories, and documents to compare life in the past with the present, and organise events, developments and the lives of individuals in chronological order. They will explore the experiences of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples, including the struggle for rights and recognition.

Students will engage in learning tasks evaluating why certain events or people were important and describe the perspectives, beliefs, values and attitudes of people and groups in Australia using evidence from primary sources. They will learn about significant individuals, including but not limited to, Henry Parkes, Edmund Barton, Vida Goldstein, Jessie Street, Bessie Rischbieth, Faith Bandler, Vincent Lingiari and Eddie Mabo.
