Mathmatics 

In maths, we will begin the term by further exploring statistics, such as looking at data sets and different forms of data representation. We will be identifying trends amongst data sets such as the mode and understanding and naming the spread of data.

We will also be continuing to develop our multiplication fluency using 'Hit the Button' where this knowledge will be directly applied when learning more about the inverse relationship between multiplication and division. Developing understanding of factors and multiples will be used in problem-solving strategies involving long multiplication and division. Strong knowledge of multiplication will additionally support concepts related to fractions such as ordering fractions, identifying equivalent fractions and simplifying fractions.

Towards the end of Term 2, we will also build on our knowledge of concepts related to measurement. This will include converting units of measurement, exploring concepts of area and perimeter and building on our understanding of time.

Starting this term some students in Grade 5 will be involved in the Junior Division Olympiad - an inter-school competition that has been designed to challenge high achieving students across Australia and New Zealand. These students will have an opportunity to   demonstrate their flexibility in problem solving and mathematical reasoning, and to be recognised for their efforts and achievement.

Some Grade 5 students will participate in the Junior Maths Games program to build their confidence in maths and to learn and develop their problem-solving skills while fostering an appreciation of maths and its application to the real-world.

Maths Games runs along the same schedule as the Maths Olympiad and comprises four ‘contest’ papers, held approximately six weeks apart, starting in Term 2 on Wednesday 6th May.
