Last week was a wonderful reflection of the richness of life within our College community and, in particular, of the Marist characteristic of Love of Work.

Across the week, we welcomed many new students and families through our Year 5 and Year 7 Orientation Days and parent events, offering them their first experiences of the relationships, hospitality and sense of belonging that are so important within our Marist community. At the same time, we celebrated the strength of our existing community through events such as our Father’s Day Breakfast, attended by approximately 800 fathers and father figures, students and other family members, as well as our Long Lunch across the weekend.

These events do not happen without considerable effort behind the scenes. Our support staff, teaching staff and students gave generously of their time and energy to ensure each occasion was welcoming and successful. A special acknowledgement goes to our Certificate II class (year 11 students), who served as wait staff at the Father’s Day Breakfast and contributed wonderfully to the spirit of hospitality throughout the morning.

The Marist characteristic of Love of Work reminds us that work is more than simply completing a task. It is about bringing commitment, generosity and purpose to what we do, particularly when that work is undertaken in the service of others.

We saw this same spirit in our students throughout the week. Our hockey team’s Grand Final victory was the visible result of many weeks and months of training, teamwork, persistence and discipline. As examinations commenced, students were similarly called to draw upon the work they have invested throughout the year, supported by teachers who continue to prepare, encourage and guide them. For our Year 12 students, each passing week brings them closer to the conclusion of their formal schooling, marking the culmination of many years of effort, growth and perseverance. All of this exemplifies the Love of Work that St Marcellin Champagnat modelled for us so many years ago.

Whether it is preparing for an examination, training for a Grand Final, welcoming a new family, serving breakfast to hundreds of guests or undertaking the countless unseen tasks that allow our College to flourish, Love of Work is evident when we give generously of ourselves for the benefit of others.

Last week provided many reasons to celebrate, but perhaps most importantly, it reminded us that the strength of our community is built through the everyday commitment of students, staff and families who willingly contribute their gifts, their effort and their time.

In this way, we continue the Marist tradition of working modestly, humbly and simply, always underpinned by Family Spirit for the purpose of bettering ourselves and serving those around us. Well done team Marist!
