Mr Scott Reaper - Program Leader - Sport

Another reminder that Met North have changed their processes regarding the communication of students selected in Met North regional and Queensland representative sporting teams.

As a result, the College is not always directly notified of student selections, which has made maintaining accurate records of representative achievements more challenging.

As we prepare for the 2026 Blue & Gold, we want to ensure that all students are appropriately recognised for their sporting achievements. To assist the College in cross-referencing our records and, importantly, ensuring no student is missed, we ask families to please complete the Microsoft Form below with details of their son’s 2026 Met North, Queensland and Australian representative sporting achievements. Please complete one form for each sport your son was selected for. The form will close Tuesday 15 September at 5:00pm. Thank you for your assistance in helping us accurately recognise and celebrate the achievements of our students.

Week 8 Sport

Week 8 got off to a fantastic start, with our Hockey team taking to the field in an entertaining and highly skilled Grand Final against St Edmund’s. In an action-packed contest, the boys produced an outstanding performance to secure a 9–6 victory and claim the premiership. Congratulations to the players and coaching staff on a fantastic season and a well-deserved result. A big thank you also to the students, staff and families who came along to support the team and cheer the boys on throughout the Grand Final.

AIC Round 6 saw our teams travel to Villanova College for another exciting weekend of competition. The 1st XIII held off a fast-finishing Villa side to secure a hard-fought 24–22 victory. The 1st IV battled their way to a 4–4 draw, narrowly going down on countback after a closely contested day of tennis. Our 1st V were involved in another thrilling contest, fighting right to the final siren before narrowly falling 83–78. Across all three sports, the boys represented the College with great determination and spirit and should hold their heads high.

This weekend, our teams are back on the road as we travel to Padua College for AIC Round 7. With our 1st XIII still firmly in contention for the premiership, it would be fantastic to see plenty of Blue and Gold on the sidelines supporting the boys. We encourage our students, families and wider College community to get behind all our teams as we approach the final stages of the AIC season.

Hockey

Ms Kathryn Badini - Hockey Coordinator

On Wednesday afternoon, our Boys' Hockey team competed in the School Boys Hockey Cup Grand Final against St Edmund's College at the State Hockey Centre. The occasion was particularly significant for two reasons. Firstly, after a season disrupted by injuries and setbacks, we were finally able to take the field with our full squad. Secondly, after falling short in previous Grand Finals against St Edmund's, the team was determined to create a new chapter.

What followed was an extraordinary game where we emerged victorious with a 9-6. An unbelievable scoreline – but it made for a very exciting match to watch.

There were many standout moments across the afternoon. Matt Alvarez’s five-goal haul was exceptional, as were the goals from Fletcher Wessling and Oscar White. Lincoln Stockwell provided outstanding attacking pressure throughout the match, Will Broughton was superb in defence, as well as our captain Dan Thirgood who led the team with composure and determination. And finally, Luke Keir scoring in the closing seconds of the game was the perfect closing note to what has been a fantastic season.

The match was also a fantastic advertisement for school hockey. Despite challenging traffic conditions, our supporters turned out in great numbers and were brilliant from start to finish. The Hive definitely helped us secure the victory.

A sincere thank you also goes to all parents, families, staff and supporters who attended and supported the team throughout the season. Hockey is a special sport within our school community, and it was wonderful to see our players rewarded with both success and recognition on such a significant stage.

Congratulations to all players and our coach Isaac Pratt on an outstanding season and a well-deserved premiership.

Basketball

Mr Jonte Brown - Basketball Coordinator

Round 6 was a challenging weekend for Marist Basketball, with our teams coming up against a strong Villanova College program. Across 31 games played, Marist recorded 6 wins and 25 losses, with several matches decided by only a handful of points.

There were some excellent performances across the College, highlighted by a strong showing from our Year 9 teams, with the 9A (59–47), 9B (62–50) and 9C (40–36) all securing victories. The 11A produced a thrilling 36–34 win, while the 3rd V (51–46) and 5C (21–14) also recorded strong victories. Several teams came agonisingly close, including the 11C (28–30), 9D (39–40), 8C (35–36), 7C (38–40) and 5D (24–26).

Despite the difficult results, there were plenty of positive signs throughout the round, with our teams continuing to compete hard and represent the College with pride. The number of closely contested games demonstrated the determination of our players, even when results did not fall our way.

With just one round remaining in the 2026 AIC Basketball season, our focus now turns to finishing the season strongly. We look forward to seeing all our players and coaches make the most of their final opportunity to represent the Blue and Gold this season.

CBSQ Junior Secondary Team Trials - Week 10, Monday @ 3:30-5pm (September 14)

Marist College Ashgrove has the opportunity to send a team to compete in the Junior Champion Basketball School of Queensland (CBSQ) competition from the 15th to 18th October in Term 4. Students from the 10A, 10B, and 9A teams will be invited to trial. If your child isn't in these teams but wishes to trial for this squad, please enquire with Mr. Stephen Carroll (Coach) or Mr. James Lymer (Assistant Coach) to ask to be invited to trial. (This competition is for students in Year 9 & 10)

AIC Round 7 – Friday 11 and Saturday 12 September

The schedule for Friday 11 and Saturday 12 September will be released early this week, with team lists to follow on Thursday 10 September (Primary Teams) and Friday 11 September (Secondary Teams). Please keep an eye out on Parent Orbit and emails for these to come out!

Round 6: Marist vs Villanova - Mr James Lymer - 1st V Coach

Last Saturday, the 1st V travelled to Villanova determined to respond strongly after last week's first loss. Facing what has traditionally been one of the toughest matchups in the AIC calendar, the boys were eager to rise to the occasion and compete at the level that has characterised their season all year, setting the tone early with toughness and intent.

Marist trailed narrowly at the first break (19-21) and remained within striking distance at halftime (40-44). Villanova extended its lead during the third quarter, but relentless defensive pressure and strong contributions from the bench reduced the margin to 55-62 heading into the final term. Yet again, the groups mental toughness was shown, opening the fourth quarter with a 9-2 run and eventually building an eight-point lead with five minutes remaining. Unfortunately, foul trouble and a few unlucky breaks halted our momentum in the clutch. Despite earning a chance to tie the game in the closing seconds, Marist fell just short, with the final score, 78-83.

Attention now turns to our final AIC game against Padua College. A victory would see the team finish the season with a 5-2 record and, with other results falling our way, keep premiership hopes alive. As always, the support from families, students, and the wider Marist community has been outstanding, particularly at away games. For one last time this year, we look forward to seeing plenty of supporters at Padua this Friday night for a 5:00pm tip-off. Let’s give our Seniors one final game to remember!

A reminder that the DRESS CODE for all T&F training sessions is as per the 2026 Track and Field Handbook. MCA sports shirts / Marist T&F singlet, Marist sports shorts, and white or blue socks.

For competitive events including Internal Mini Meets, the DRESS CODE is as per the 2026 Track and Field Handbook. Marist T&F singlet, Marist sports shorts, and white or blue socks.

It is important we get this right now throughout the AIC Practice Meets, and we will be competing in the AIC Championship AS A TEAM wearing this uniform.

AIC Practice Meet #2

It was fantastic to see another consistent turnout of students at QSAC last week for our second AIC Practice Meet.

Conditions were a little cooler throughout the evening, which made the run-ups in the jumps a little more challenging. However, this provides excellent learning and preparation for the AIC Championship, where conditions may vary across the two days of competition.

A big thank you to our wonderful coaching team, who continue to guide the boys through these challenges, develop their awareness and encourage them to problem solve while still competing strongly.

Some good performances: Some of the best performances from AIC Practice Meet #2 included –

  • A 10.57 second hand time for Isaac Ting in the Opens 100m
  • A 11.9 second hand time for Aaron Doyle in the U14 100m
  • A 10.8 second hand time for Hayden Lockhart in the U16 100m
  • A strong 800m for Toby Patricks in the U13 age group with a 2:26.67 time

  • Eli Miles throwing a strong 44.74m in the U16 javelin and Aiden O’Reilly 48.3m in the Opens javelin
  • Henry Julicher throwing 11.93m in the U14 shot put

AIC Practice Meet #3 will be held this Thursday. We are aware that the exam block and Year 9 Camp may present some challenges; however, we are looking forward to another excellent gathering of Marist Track and Field squad members.

With the AIC Championship getting closer, every opportunity to compete, learn and improve is valuable.

A special congratulations to our new record holders on an outstanding achievement. Setting a College record is a significant accomplishment and reflects the commitment, persistence and desire to continually improve.

We also acknowledge and congratulate the previous record holders for their excellent performances and the contribution they have made to the legacy to the Marist Track and Field program.

The Road to AIC

Thanks for your support throughout Term 3. All sports, coaches and students have been very flexible throughout much of the term with other competing activities and commitments. However, as we move towards the AIC Championship, we now ask that students begin to give Marist Track and Field a greater level of focus and commitment over the next 4–5 weeks.

Our challenge once Term 3 sports have finished is clear: stay committed, trust the process, support your teammates and make every session and competition count.

If we can do that, we will give ourselves every opportunity to achieve something special at AIC.

If you have any questions on any of the above, contact Mr Richard Graham, Mr Robin Martin or Mr Thomas Prole.

Swimming

Mr James Boyce - Director of Swimming

As we approach the final weeks of Term 3, preparations are well underway for the return of college swimming in Term 4. All students wishing to participate in the program must be registered via Parent Orbit.

This season, we will continue to build our program around the three key values established last year that now underpin everything we do: Courage, Unity and Performance.

Courage is having the confidence to challenge yourself, step outside your comfort zone, support your teammates and embrace the opportunity to compete against the very best.

Unity is the foundation of our identity. It means working hard for one another, celebrating success together, supporting each other through challenges and recognising that our greatest strength comes from operating as one team.

Performance is the result of commitment, discipline, accountability and the pursuit of excellence. It is reflected not only on race day, but also in the daily habits, decisions and standards that prepare us to perform when it matters most.

Our aim is to create an environment where every swimmer understands that their individual commitment contributes to something bigger. Consistent attendance, high training standards and supporting teammates will be important as we continue to build towards the 2026–27 College swimming season.

Swimming remains free during Term 4 and Term 1 for Marist students participating in the College training squads. Students are also welcome to join our Barracudas or Marlins squads at a discounted rate for additional training opportunities.

Training Attendance

Attendance will be recorded at every training session. Each year group will be required to meet a minimum attendance standard to be eligible for team selection.

This is designed to ensure fairness and accountability across the program while rewarding the students who consistently demonstrate their commitment to the team and their training.
