Hutchies Inspires Future Careers in Construction

Year 10 Construction and General Engineering students recently had the privilege of attending an engaging and informative presentation delivered by representatives from Hutchinson Builders (Hutchies), one of Australia's largest and most respected construction companies. The session provided students with valuable insights into the wide range of careers available within the construction industry and highlighted the many pathways that can lead to successful and rewarding employment. 

The presentation was led by Anthony Stevens, Senior Project Manager, and Michelle Buckland, Pathways Engagement Lead, who shared their extensive industry knowledge and outlined the breadth of opportunities available across the construction sector. Students learned that modern construction extends well beyond the traditional trades, encompassing careers in engineering, project management, design, estimating, safety, technology, business operations and many other specialised fields.

A particular highlight of the afternoon was hearing from three Marist College Ashgrove Old Boys who are now building successful careers with Hutchies. Bayley Caplick (Class of 2023), recently recognised as the Third-Year Apprentice Winner at the 2026 Hutchies Training Awards, shared his apprenticeship journey and the opportunities that have arisen through his commitment to learning his trade. Pedro Hoffman (Class of 2024) and George Collyer (Class of 2025) also spoke about their transitions from school to industry, offering practical advice and genuine encouragement to students considering careers in construction.

The Old Boys were exceptionally well received by the students, who appreciated hearing firsthand accounts from young men who were recently in their position and have already established themselves within a leading Australian company. Their stories demonstrated that there are multiple pathways into the industry and that dedication, work ethic and a willingness to learn can open many doors.
