What's happening in the classroom

Foundation

The Foundation students have come back from holidays very settled and refreshed for their final term! In Mathematics, the students have been learning about Data. Students had opportunities to collect, sort and represent data in different ways. They surveyed their peers with their own questions and then recorded and analysed that data. They also enjoyed the opportunity to finish this unit of work with some edible data! Students were given a packet of M&Ms to sort into colours and then recorded their findings in a graph. Students analysed their data by identifying which colours appeared the most and least number of times.  Safe to say, this data has now been erased!

Grade 1

Our legends in Grade 1 have had a busy few weeks to start the beginning of term 4. In Maths, students have investigated the benefits of data collection, and the ways in which we can gather data through both observations and surveys to come to accurate conclusions. We have likewise been looking into how location can be used to change a position, and how we can use verbal and written instructions to support this.

In Science, we have dived into the world of chemical sciences as we gear up for our upcoming excursion to Science Works in Echuca. Our grade 1 crew have been looking into properties of materials, how we can best describe them and their purposes, and how they can differ between objects, mixtures and materials. Allowing us to get hands on and create our own Play-Doh to further investigate, predict and evaluate these changes through inquiry.

Grade 2

Term 4 started with an incursion on Day 1! We had Kevin and Pauline from World of Robotics come and teach us how to program. We learned how to code directions into our robot cars to make them go forwards/backwards and turn left/right. Once we had mastered that, we then had to program our cars to travel a certain distance along a straight road. We were so good at programming our cars that we were given the challenge of making our cars drive around the block, which involved estimating how far along the road our car had to travel before turning and travelling along to the next intersection, repeating this until our car made it back to us. We had a lot of laughs and a few fender benders, but it was great learning.

Grade 3

Last week, our Grade 3 students enjoyed an exciting adventure at Nillahcootie Camp. Throughout their visit, they participated in a range of outdoor activities including canoeing, archery, low ropes, hut building, flying fox and bush cooking. Students challenged themselves, developed teamwork skills, built resilience, and created great memories while exploring the natural environment. It was a wonderful opportunity for everyone to learn new skills, make connections with their peers, and step outside their comfort zones!

Grade 4

Grade 4 Adventure in Historic Beechworth

On Friday 16 October, our Grade 4 students set off on an exciting bus trip to the historic town of Beechworth for a day filled with discovery, connection and hands-on learning. The day began in the beautiful Town Hall Gardens, where students gathered with friends and teachers, ready for the adventures ahead. A highlight of the excursion was the fascinating Bee School session, where students learned about the incredible work of bees and their importance to our environment. Students were also captivated by a guided tour of the Old Beechworth Gaol, stepping back in time as they explored one of Victoria’s most significant historic sites and heard stories from the past.

Beyond the learning, the day provided countless opportunities for students to build friendships, work together and create lasting memories. Seeing history, science and local heritage come to life outside the classroom sparked curiosity and enthusiasm in our young learners. It was a wonderful day of exploration, connection and real-world learning, and we are incredibly proud of the way our students represented our school throughout the excursion.

Grade 5 and 6

During week 1 the Grade 5 and 6 students were lucky enough to spend 3 days on camp at Borambola. During this time they did a range of activities such as a mud run, archery, kayaking, rock climbing, BMX riding, fencing, swimming and circus tricks. They had so much fun and were able to challenge themselves to try new things and work with a different set of friends. The resilience and readiness to step outside their comfort zone was wonderful to see. Thanks to the teachers who came along and to the students for making it such an enjoyable experience for all.
