The Season of Creation:
Caring for Our Common Home
As a Catholic school community, we are invited to celebrate the Season of Creation, an annual ecumenical season of prayer, reflection and action for our common home. Each year, Christians around the world come together from September 1, the World Day of Prayer for the Care of Creation, to October 4, the Feast of St Francis of Assisi, to renew our commitment to caring for God’s creation.
The Season of Creation reminds us that creation is not simply something we use or consume. It is a gift from God entrusted to our care. In Laudato Si’, Pope Francis reminds us of our responsibility to become “protectors of God’s handiwork” and to recognise our interconnectedness with one another and with the natural world.
During this season, we are encouraged to pause and recognise God’s presence in creation. We can pray with gratitude for the beauty and diversity of our common home and ask for the wisdom and courage to care for it responsibly.
A Time For Action
The Season of Creation is also an invitation to put our faith into action. Small choices can contribute to a culture of care and stewardship. As a Catholic community, we are called to recognise our responsibility to care for our common home and to consider how our choices affect people and communities around the world.
Our Congo Aid initiatives, led through Jackson House, provide a wonderful example of our school community putting this call into action. Through initiatives such as the 20 Dollar Boss program, BBQ fundraising and our recycling bins, Jackson House has rallied our school community to work together in support of communities in the Congo.
These initiatives demonstrate that even seemingly small actions can contribute to something much greater. By choosing to participate, recycle, fundraise and support others, our students are learning that Faith in Action is about more than words, it is about responding to the needs of others with compassion, solidarity and practical action.
This reflects key principles of Catholic Social Teaching, including:
- Stewardship: recognising our responsibility to care for God's creation and its resources.
- Human Dignity: recognising the inherent dignity and worth of every person.
- Solidarity: understanding that we are connected to people and communities beyond our immediate surroundings.
- The Common Good: working together to create a world where all people can flourish.
From Small Actions to Collective Change
The Jackson House Congo Aid initiatives remind us that when a community comes together, small actions can create meaningful change. Together, may our school community continue to transform faith into action through compassion, stewardship and solidarity.
