Ag Round-Up

Report by Ms Bray, Agriculture and Primary Industries Teacher

AG Camp

Ag Camp proceeded in Week 7 of this term. Six students from years 10 and 11 had the opportunity to attend a fully funded week-long excursion that saw them visit multiple different industries in agriculture around the region. They included; local businesses from the Australian Cotton Research Institute and Narrabri Fish Farm, to out of region places including Stahmans Pecan Farm, Vitonga Orange Orchard, Delungra Working Dogs and Myola Feedlot.

The students were able to discuss the range of career types in each organisation and career opportunities with representatives from each organisation. They made great new connections that could lead to future work experience or career opportunities.

Narrabri Show

Students attended the Narrabri Show in early May where they competed in junior judging events including, Merino Fleece, Merino Sheep, Fruit and Vegetable, Meat Sheep and Grain Judging. Students were successful placing on the day, and had the opportunity to talk to industry professionals and build upon their understanding of judging.

A Fond Farewell For Bubbles

Recently we had a send-off for 'our' beloved Hereford cow, Bubbles. She was returned to her owner, Janine McGowen at Hillview, where she will see out her retirement. Bubbles, along with her daughter Champagne (previously returned) hold a special place in our hearts and have been there for students throughout the years to gain confidence and experience in showing cattle.

Feed Trials For Chickens - In late May, our Agriculture students welcomed 20 chicks to the farm. The chicks are part of a feed trial conducted by our Year 11 Agriculture students. The chicks were split into two groups and fed a diet with different protein ratios to see which diet is more beneficial for weight gain and growth.
