Our Dynamic Trio Wins Again
In recent news, Kyne Allen, Hunter Doring and Brock Allen this week won the CHS North West Bowls finals competition against fellow finalists, Inverell High School. WWHS won 24-2 after 9 ends. Their win came just as the rain began. Now it is on to the NSW State Finals. Congratulations Boys!
Sports Report - Term 2 2023
This term has been another busy term for the PDHPE department with sport kicking off for all students in Week 1. For Tuesday sport, students have enjoyed participating weekly in Basketball, Netball, Fishing, Indoor Volleyball, Lawn Bowls, Ultimate Frisbee, Soccer and Yoga/Mindfulness.
Week One - Sports Awards were distributed each week to those students who displayed teamwork, participation, and sportsmanship at sport. These awards will be drawn at the end of the year. The following students are to be commended on their 100% attendance at sport for Term 2 – Bailey Baker (Year 9), Andrew Easterbrook (Year 9), Mason Humphries (Year 8), Mia Kiem (Year 9), Jett Palmer (Year 9), Caitlyn Smith (Year 8) and Cassidy Welsh (Year 9).
This year for the first time, students will also receive a report regarding sport. Teachers have provided each student with a grade regarding participation and sportsmanship, with attendance data reflecting a further grade. Sport has been included as reportable at WWHS to improve student outcomes in all areas included in the report.
Week Two - saw Nate Dewson (Year 7) qualified to swim in five events across the three days at the NSWCHSSA Swimming Championships in Sydney. He swam courageously throughout the meet and enjoyed his experience in Sydney. Kyne Allen (Year 10), Hunter Doring (Year 8) and Brock Allen (Year 8) represented Wee Waa at the North West Lawn Bowls Trials in Tamworth on Monday, 1 May, with Kyne and Hunter selected to represent North West at the NSWCHSSA Championships in Dubbo in Week 10 of this term. This year’s House Captains (Namoi Captains – Emily Hartnett and Brody Slee, Namoi Vice Captains – Jye Smith and Haylie Reynolds. Merah Captains – Megan Crutcher and Jackson Humphries. Merah Vice Captains – Josie Galagher and Lucy Crutcher) were also presented with their badges by a parent or sibling at School Assembly. Congratulations to these students. Our MC students (Isaac Green (Year 10), Charlie Jones (Year 10), Alexi Hannaford (Year 9) and Tyler Simmonds (Year 9) also represented our school (and were featured on the Channel 9 News) this week, competing against eleven other schools at the Boccia tournament in Tamworth. Supported by Mr Scott Hogden and Alison Gavan, the team proudly represented our school and played with much enthusiasm as a team, despite this being their first tournament.
Week Three - involved the representation of students in rugby league and open girls touch football. A massive round of applause is required for our fabulous open girls touch team comprising of Emily Hartnett (Year 11), Lacey Evans (Year 11), Megan Crutcher (Year 11), Georgia Horne (Year 9), Matilda Currey (Year 10), Lexie Horne (Year 7), Edom Hastings (Year 7), Ruby Currey (Year 7), Taylor Horne (Year 8) and Samantha Marchant (Year 10). The girls played exceptionally well, however were narrowly defeated, with a very close score of 4-3 to Glenn Innes High School. Whilst on the same day, the Alan Tongue 16's Rugby League Carnival was held at Scully Park, Tamworth. The team, comprising of Toby Gallagher (Year 10), Mason Humphries (Year 8), Harry Evans (Year 9), Brody Slee (Year 10), James Williams (Year 10), Rakaia Skinner (Year 8), Angus Caterer (Year 9), David Biles (Year 10), Cody Tompkins (Year 9), Jackson Humphries (Year 11), Mekhi Ross (Year 9) and Clay Hoffman (Year 10), played extremely well under the coaching staff of Mr Corey Swan and Mr Lachlan Trindall contesting three hard fought matches. Well done team!
Week Three, also saw Matilda Currey (Year 10) attend the NSWCHSSA 18’s Rugby 7’s championships in Newcastle as a member of the North Coast team. Wee Waa High School Opens Girls Netball Team played in the Pool 3 Gala Day round robin against Narrabri High and Moree Secondary College on Friday, 12th May. The girls were a little slow to start against Narrabri High in their first game, but some strong defence and goal shooting saw them come home with the win in a final score of 23-4. After a quick ten minute break the girls took the court to take on Moree Secondary College, continuing their strong performance, WWHS lead 10-1 after the first quarter. Strong defence and regular scoring saw the Wee Waa High team continue to build on their score and take the game 34-12 after the final buzzer. Well done girls and thank you to the parents and carers who transported the girls to the gala day.
Week Four - slowed down a little with the following students wished every success in their sporting endeavours. Matilda Currey (Year 10) represented our school as part of the North West Secondary netball teams attending the NSWCHSSA Netball Championships in Orange, whilst the Opens Lawn Bowls team (Kyne Allen, Hunter Doring & Brock Allen) set to play Lightning Ridge Central School in Lightning Ridge on Thursday, 18th May in the CHS North West Opens Bowls competition. Week 5 allowed us to catch our breath, until this postponed match in Week 6 (Thursday, 1st June), where all boys performed extremely well against a team of beginners in the sport of lawn bowls, defeating Lightning Ridge 47-0. On Friday, 2nd June (Week 6) the girls open volleyball team road tripped to Armidale under the expertise of Ms Trevaskis and support from Imogen Bailey, where the team played four matches against Inverell, Warialda, MacIntyre and Coonabarabran. Despite only winning their match versus Coonabarabran, the team consisting of Cassidy Welsh (Year 9), Mia Kiem (Year 9), Jannali Kennedy (Year 9), Samantha Marchant (Year 10), Eliza Hatton (Year 9), Mia George (Year 9), Dakota Welsh (Year 9), Emily Hartnett (Year 11), Megan Crutcher (Year 11), Lacey Evans (Year 11), improved tremendously throughout the day (leading against undefeated MacIntyre High early) and must be commended on their tenacity, sportsmanship and friendship. Next year we hope to see enough male students wishing to participate in this worthwhile Volleyball Gala Day.
Week Seven - began at breakneck speed where on Monday, 5th June the Opens Lawn Bowls team played Walcha Central School (Semi Final) for a place in the Final against Inverell High School. Thank you to the families for their support of these students, with Wee Waa triumphant 24-4.
Week Eight - (despite the Long Weekend), the Wee Waa High School Athletics Carnival was scheduled to take place on Tuesday, 13th June, however due to poor weather staff clamoured to reorganise the event for Thursday, 15th June at Cook Oval. Sensational weather was experienced on the day, with the event very well supported by staff, students, and parents. Both attendance and participation were pleasing with seventy students contesting the many and varied events. Unfortunately, Namoi House was defeated convincingly by Merah. Five records were broken on the day. Congratulations to the following students:
Matilda Currey (Year 10) – 16 years girls discus – New school record: 20.29m
Georgia Horne (Year 9) – 15 years girls shot put – New school record: 7.68m
Toby Galagher (Year 10) – 16 years boys discus – New school record: 25.39m
James Williams (Year 10) – 16 years discus – New school record: 27.43m
Jackson Humphries (Year 11) – 16 years discus – New school record: 28.14m

Week 9 - With the end of term now fast approaching an early start was required on Monday, 19th June (Week 9) where the opens netball team headed to Inverell with eight players ranging from year 8 to year 11. The girls played a hard-fought game against a strong Inverell HS team, unfortunately being out played across the court. Thank you to Mrs Currey for coaching the girls and to the parents who transported the girls for the game, your support was greatly appreciated.
On Thursday, 22nd June the Open Lawn Bowls team will play Inverell High School in the Final of the North West Opens Bowls NSWCHSSA knockout for a seeded
position in the State Championships to be held next term at Glenbrook Bowling Club (Wed, 16th and Thurs, 17th August).
Finally, we have made it to Week Ten, with NAIDOC Week celebrations being a highlight. On Tuesday, 27th June during sport our students played a variety of indigenous games.
As a faculty we wish to thank all staff of Wee Waa High School for volunteering to assist with managing, coaching and supporting roles of not only sporting teams, Tuesday sport, extra cover for PDHPE lessons, as well as supporting the Athletics Carnival and other sporting endeavours within the school. The opportunities provided for our students reflect greatly in their learning outcomes and overall high school experiences.
