Debating Team Undefeated and at the Top of the Ladder

After our debate about toy weapons last week our school debating team is undefeated and at the top of the Geelong ladder, which I have copied below.

Congratulations to Thoorigai Murugan, Radhika (Sonnet) Pandit, Matilda Messer and Gemma Lewis who have worked so hard all year to do so well.

They have also been consistently graceful in winning and in supporting each other.

Our next debate is against the team in second place. The team is determined to do their best and research the topic thoroughly. The topic is:

That crops that require substantial environmental altering (irrigation, fertilizers, etc.) should not be allowed to be grown in Australia

What do you think?

MFG Debaters Win the Regional Competition.

Gemma Ellis, Sonnet (Radhika) Pandit and Matilda Messer won the Year 10 division regional debating competition on Thursday the 4th of August, defeating Geelong College in a convincing win.

The team, with the support of the other member debater, Thoorigai Murugan and school staff worked hard to research and consider the complex topic regarding sustainable farming.  They referenced up to 20 scientific and agricultural research papers to provide the audience and adjudicator with an exemplary argument for which the other team, although they tried, had no effective, corresponding rebuttal.

This year the team has been undefeated in a season that has been complicated by a return to online debates after the first two were held at Geelong Grammar. For Thursday’s debate the students met in the library at the school and were able to have some friends and family as an audience. This was to our teams advantage, not only for the moral support but so team members could support each other to identify rebuttal points without resorting to google docs as they had done previously.

Where to Now?

The debating club is looking for new members to join the junior program which starts this term.

We are planning a fun debate at lunch time about a topic suggested by students. Watch Compass for details or come and see or email Ms Harris: 02230951@mfgsc.vic.edu.au

Be there or be triangular!
