Incursion with Cuc Lam

On Friday the 13th of March, the grade three and four department attended an incursion ran by the Stony Creek Councillor-Cuc Lam. This experience relates to the focus of our current Inquiry unit on government and democracy.

During the first half of the incursion, Cuc shared her personal story of immigrating to Australia from Vietnam as a refugee in 1978. Students learnt about the hardship that Cuc and her family endured and were amazed that Cuc had even sold her wedding ring to buy a red vinyl suitcase, ensuring she would not arrive empty handed.

The second half of the incursion involved students asking specific questions about how local government works. A few students from each grade were able to ask Cuc about her experience as a councillor and mayor. Some of the questions included:

  • What is your favourite part about being a local councillor and why? - Sadie 3MK
  • What was your favourite thing to do while you were the mayor? -Oscar 3ES
  • How did you feel when you first got elected to local council? -Edie and Elise 3/4DW
  • Who inspired or encouraged you in your life to become a councillor? - Kiki 4CL
  • At council meetings, is the mayor the boss? - Allegra 4LB
  • How can we become a councillor? -Myles 4MK

Many students expressed that they too would like to become a councillor or mayor in the future!
