Vermont Secondary College

State Lawn Bowls

Our VSC Coles Bowls Academy (CBA) embarked on their first State Finals at Sunbury Bowls Club on Wednesday 28th April. It was an early start to the day and with the full support of our Sport Leader Shaun Gillespie, the students were greeted with delicious ham and cheese croissants before the long drive. All of our 3 teams were extremely competitive throughout the day, with 2 teams making the semi-final play-off. Both teams lost in their respective semi-final, although this was an amazing effort considering the other schools consisted of pennant players and had years of experience.Max S, Ollie W, Ben S, Tom B, Lachlan W, Will J, James C, Tim K, Jack R, Jake M, & Tyson G, should all be commended for their commitment and effort over the last couple of months and will aim to go one better at next year’s competition!

Division Cross Country

On Tuesday the 4th of May, 88 students competed at the long-awaited Waverley Division Cross Country event at Norton’s Park in Wantirna. VSC once again proved itself to be a force to be reckoned with at the Division level with numerous teams and individuals earning their spots in the EMR Cross Country event in June.

Vermont finished 1st overall for the day. In addition to this VSC also won both the junior and senior shields and were runners up in the intermediate shield.

Senior Round Robin

Girls Netball

On Friday the 7th of May, the senior girls netball A&B teams travelled by bus to Maroondah Nets to compete in the Waverley Division netball round robin. The 'B' team featuring Adrienne, Charli, Loreena, Morgan, Katelyn, Alicia, Irene and Teesh played a total of four extremely competitive games which resulted in them finishing 4th overall. The 'A' team played three games against Mount Waverley, Glen Waverley and Highvale Secondary College. All day Kate, Alex, Steph, Gena, Brooke, Holli, Poppy, Felicity and Emme worked very hard as a team and executed their game plan to perfection. In the final against Mount Waverley, the girls were down by 7 points in the first quarter, then pulled off a huge comeback which resulted in them winning by a goal (scored by Emme ‘Slam’ Duncan), and thus were crowned Waverley Division Champions.

Boys AFL

On Friday 6/5 Our senior boys AFL football team headed to Wellington Reserve, Mulgrave for what had been a long time coming for any school footy team. Once the dust was shaken off the jumpers and the dew was kicked off by the teams in the first match it was time for Vermont to take the field. Traditionally VSC has no great problem in progressing in this round and this again was the case with 3 convincing wins on the day. A key focus was on discipline and respect for the opposition. Following the 3rd and final match of the day, pleasingly, the umpire called us in and congratulated us on our efforts but specifically in the way we conducted ourselves across the course of the day. Too many good players to list but a special mention to Josh S for getting his work done to be able to come along and to play really well, and one of our younger players Henry S (Y11). A special thanks to Kylie Angland for her help on the day. Mr Billings.

Badminton

Well done to the senior Boys and Girls A and B team Badminton. Arriving at Kilsyth to play against Glen Waverley, Mount Waverley and Highvale was no easy feat. While our teams were prepared and capable players, displaying whip like accuracy our opponents outplayed our students. At the end of the day, Team A Boys and Girls were places 4th and 3rd respectively, while Team B Boys and Girls were 4th and 2nd.

Girls Soccer

A beautiful Autumn day greeted us for a day like no other. Our team led by Mandela Russell started off with a hard fought 1-0 win over Glen Waverley. Our team could see that Aly B was going to be our star who has had a lot of football experience. Our second game was against a much tougher –experienced outfit against Mount Waverley and we went down 7-0. Our third game against Highvale was a beauty, winning 4-0. Maragarita S came off the bench and scored 2 goals. We had 2/3 wins which meant we qualified for the final against Mount Waverley, however we managed to fight it out with a 2-0 loss. A great day had by all: Penny M, Alysha B , Bebe H, Shammah M, Mandela R, Ellie R, Margarita S, Niyousha S, Tameekah T, Dayna T, Artryia V, Hailey F and Alyanna S. A very big thank you to our coach and Manager, Mr.Duiveman.

Eastern Metropolitan Region Finals

Intermediate Boys Baseball

The Intermediate Baseball Team arrived at Gilbert Park full of confidence and positivity as they aimed to progress through the EMR stage. With our first game being shortened due to our opposition arriving late, this resulted in a solid win with a strong first inning. In the second game against Ringwood SC, our team held their offence to 1 run after 2 innings until the opposition were able to string a couple of hits together with runners on base and ended up defeating our VSC team. In the final sectional game against Brentwood SC, our players were incredible in defence and held the opposition to 1 run, with some magnificent pitching and timely hits, VSC finished this contest with a 3-1 win. Unfortunately, it came down to percentage and we did not proceed to the Grand Final, although our team should hold their heads high and look forward to going one better next year!
