OGA Careers Event

OGA Year 12 Careers Event

Year 12 students enjoyed a Careers event hosted by the OGA on Wednesday 19th May.

Three Old Girtonians returned to share their professional and life experiences since leaving Girton with our Year 12 students.

Students heard from an Orthodontist, a Legal Advisor / Commissioner for Multicultural Youth and a First Fleet Officer.

Dr Bethany Cunning (2009) began her journey to becoming an Orthodontist while she was working as an associate dentist at a local private practice.  Bethany completed her primary examinations with the Royal Australasian College of Dental Surgeons and then left her full-time dentistry job to undertake a Doctor of Clinical Dentistry degree, specialising in orthodontics at The University of Melbourne for the next 3 years.  Bethany reflected on what she wished she had known during her VCE years and had some astute advice for our Year 12 students on how important it is to find the balance between study and life.

Khayshie Tilak-Ramesh (2014) is a passionate advocate for youth, multiculturalism and representation of lived experience at influential decision-making tables. She is an experienced Director, Legal Advisor and the Multicultural Youth Commissioner of Victoria with an Honours Degree in Law and Accreditation in Mediation. Khayshie spoke about how she tackled the most challenging question posed to her in Year 12 of “What do you want to do?” and rephrasing it into “How do I find my purpose?”.

Our third speaker was Zac Clarke (2011), who immediately after school began his Cadetship with Jetstar in Hamilton, New Zealand where he lived for the next 18 months.  Zac is a First Fleet Officer in the Airbus Fleet and holds the highest licence available for civil aircraft as well as endorsements on the Airbus A319/A320 and A321 aircraft.  He also founded a company called “Sky Soles”, designing and exporting dress footwear to airlines and airline crew worldwide.  Zac shared tips on how important it is to find what you are passionate about and pursuing this in your career.

Thank you to Morgan O'Meara (12 Aherne), Eliza O'Sullivan (12 Jones), Aubrey Jacobs (12 Jones), Jacob McKenzie (12 Millward) and Jemima Davis (12 Jones) for stepping into the role of student hosts for the event and introducing our speakers.
