Vale Mrs Viv McMillan
It was with immense sadness that the Girton Grammar School community mourned the loss of Mrs Viv McMillan who passed away on Sunday 13th December, 2020.
For more than twenty years, Viv wore numerous Girton hats and was many things to many people. She taught Mathematics, Science and Information Technology to generations of Girtonians and has supported countless LRC students, especially in Numeracy.
When Millward House was introduced in 2001, Viv became one of the first House Tutors for Millward, remaining so for 19 years. Her husband John, at the same time, was the founding Head of Millward House. Viv and John’s two children, Patrick and Katherine, who attended Senior School at Girton, were also in Millward, confirming that purple is deep in the DNA of the McMillan’s.
Viv contributed enormously for many years to the Girton Basketball club, as MiC and Team Manager, nurturing a love of the game in her young charges and encouraging translation of lessons learned on the court to the lessons needed in life.
Viv’s colleagues hold a deep respect for her teaching expertise and she is valued for many reasons, both professional and personal. She is patient; no student in her class is left behind, calm; wearing the angst of teenage demands bravely, and reliable; expecting no one else to solve problems for her.
Viv’s kind, caring and gentle nature will be greatly missed at Girton and the School is blessed to have had such a wonderful teacher and person shape so many young lives. Our heartfelt sympathies are extended to the McMillan family.
