Harmony Week

School News

A big thank you to all the staff and students who participated in the terrific Harmony Week activities at Girton Grammar in March this year.

Opening the week on Monday morning, Wamba Wamba man Uncle Ron Murray and his wife Sarah James did a warm Acknowledgment of Country, with a performance of didgeridoo, violin and voice. Uncle Ron and Sarah then ran cultural presentation sessions for Year 3 – 10 during the morning and delighted and intrigued students and teachers alike with storytelling and deep knowledge of Dja Dja Wurrung Country and regional history.

During the special afternoon, Harmony Day Assembly, Dr Massey and Reverend Karen Reid both talked about the benefits of living in a multicultural society and the individual and group effort required to live harmoniously. GCAG students then surprised the audience with data about cultural diversity in Bendigo and Girton, showing that 10% of current Girton students were born in a country other than Australia. Following another performance at the afternoon assembly, Uncle Ron and Sarah ran a mind-opening PD session for the music department.

During the rest of the week, GCAG students and staff ran several activities.  On Tuesday, Year 7 students challenged Year 8's in a series of very enthusiastic soccer games in the Gym.  During Wednesday lunch, students crafted origami figures and friendship bracelets in the PA courtyard, while another group of students had a quiet viewing of the Japanse Anime film Ponyo.  On Friday, students again had the opportunity for crafting while Bubble Tea was served out the front of 65 Wattle.
