Old Girtonian Donates Grant to Girton Netball
During the 2019 season of the Suncorp Super Netball Competition, Caitlin Thwaites (Frew, 2004), a past Girton student and Australian Diamonds netball player was playing for the Melbourne Vixens. In round 8, Caitlin was named the Nissan Player of the Match and she nominated the Girton Netball Club as her chosen club to receive a grant of $500.
This money was gratefully received, and the decision was made to create a service award to recognise the significant contributions made by coaches and administrators within the club. The money was used to purchase an honour board to recognise the people who have made an outstanding contribution to the club over many years.
The Girton Netball Club is fortunate to have staff, parents and students coach our teams at training sessions each week and at matches on Friday nights or Saturdays. There is a significant commitment required to give up time on the weekends to coach our Junior and Senior School netball teams.
The staff, Mrs Hamilton, Mrs Fisher, Mrs Gibson, Mrs Peter and Mrs Moss have all been coaching Girton teams for a minimum of ten years. This commitment has allowed them all to coach Girton teams at the domestic and representative levels whilst others have toured internationally with Girton netball teams. Mrs Hamilton, Mrs Fisher, Mrs Moss and Mrs Gibson have all taken on the role of Mic of Junior and or Senior netball to allow the club to continue participating in local netball competitions.
The parent coaches Mrs Barber and Mrs Whyte have each been coaching Girton netball teams for several years. They have passionately imparted their extensive netball knowledge and experience to not only their own children but to many others in their coaching roles. These students would all agree that their netball has been enhanced, having been coached by these two ladies.
Our student honouree, Ella Fisher, was a player from Years 3-12 and Netball Captain for three years from 2017-2019. Whilst holding the role of Netball Captain, Ella was very active in the club. She assisted former Australian Diamonds netball player Sarah Wall with several Netfit clinics at the school, coached Girton teams and played for Girton at the domestic and representative levels. She took great pride in her role as Netball Captain and she went above and beyond all expectations, assisting the Mic to ensure the netball club was successful.
These women have all been actively involved in, and dedicated to, the club for many years, and their contributions are very much appreciated.
Mrs Linda Gibson
