Careers News

LAKE ILLAWARRA HIGH CAREERS WEBSITE
A useful website that is used by Yr 10 -12 students to access current information to assist in future directions, career planning, general information, job vacancies and newsletters. Facebook is also added to this website so students can like the page and get prompts for job vacancies, special events and current careers information. All caregivers are also welcome to access the site and find useful information. The link is lakeillawarrahighcareers.com or you can simply type in Lake Illawarra High School Careers in any search engine.
WORK EXPERIENCE
Students in Year 10 are invited to participate in work experience during the last week of Term 1. Information has been discussed and distributed during careers lessons. This is a very worthwhile experience for all students to be involved in as it could open doors to further opportunities and build interest towards different careers.
At Lake Illawarra HS, students in Year 10 are able to do work experience again during the last week of Term 2 and 3, as well as in late Term 4. So, if students are keen to do more than one week to help finalise future planning it is possible, they simply need to discuss things with the Careers Adviser. It is important that students are active to secure work experience as early as possible in order not to miss out on their first choice of location. Students are invited to find their own work experience, but if support is required they can ask the Careers Adviser for help.
R2GO
Various students have been selected to participate in the Ready 2 Go program at Lake Illawarra HS for this term. This program is for Year 8 - 12 students to further assist them in small groups or individually. Depending on their needs students can learn how to apply for jobs, make positive decisions for their career future and help them achieve their aspirations. Some students who have transitioned early into work, study or traineeships and apprenticeships have been connected to this program and new students will always be invited to participate.
YEAR 11 IN2Uni MENTORING
On Wednesday last week a team of In2uni mentors from the University of Wollongong came to our school to talk to the Year 11 students. The whole year was divided into three groups and the In2uni mentors covered topics of
- Personal learning styles
- How individuals learn differently
- What type of learner are you?
UOW has had a close connection with Lake Illawarra HS and have proactively worked with our high school to develop positive links to further education and tertiary study. Although not all students are planning on going on to university, the skills taught are also required for employment, study and traineeships or apprenticeships.
This activity is an extension of the senior mentoring program MRM, at LIHS so that students can learn about their skills and develop strategies on how to reach their potential in senior school. There are three more activities planned this year and students who are part of the individual mentoring groups will be able to extend on this activity with their LIHS teacher mentor.
Thank you UOW In2uni team for your commitment to our school and helping all our students.
