U15'S BEN CREAGH SHIELD
On Tuesday 3rd of March our Under 15 boys Rugby league team travelled to Sid Parrish Park to participate in the Ben Creagh Shield Knockout.
The day got off to a bad start with only 12 players turning up to play. Despite this the boys put up a great display in their first game against Oak Flats High, scoring a couple of early tries to go into half time with a narrow lead. The second half saw each school trade try for try with our boys scoring in the corner on the bell to level the scores at 20 all.
Unfortunately the conversion missed, with the game ending in a draw and the two schools sharing the points. Our second game against Woonona High School started badly with one of players suffering a head knock and being ruled out for the rest of the game. This meant we were down to eleven players for the remainder of the game. The boys dug deep in the first half and managed to go to half time at 4 all. The second half was a tough affair and with playing two players short, the extra effort took its toll, with Woonona scoring two late tries and winning the game 14 points to 4.
With a full team and a few reserves I am sure that our team would have won their two games and progressed into the semi finals, but it was not to be, however, every player should be proud of the way they played and how they represented the School. Well done boys!

HASSETT CUP CRICKET
Our junior Hassett Cup Cricket Team travelled to Bundanoon, in the Highlands for 2 matches of 20/20 cricket. Unfortunately some students who had committed to the team didn’t make the morning bus departure, leaving the boys to take the field with only 8 players. However, to the boys credit they never gave up and did the school proud.
In our 1st match against Oak Flats High School we reached 2/93 with Connor Healey top scoring with 35, his younger brother Rowan made it a family affair with 16 runs. Oak Flats chased the total down with 5 overs to spare, Ben Pemberton claiming 2 wickets for the Lake.
Our 2nd game saw the team jump back in the bus and travel down the road to play Bowral High School. We bowled 1st and focused on giving everyone a go. Ben Pemberton was again amongst the wickets claiming 2/20, he was well supported by Logan Moosmann who took 2/26. Amish Kumar in his first ever game of cricket took 1 wicket and a beautiful run out where he threw the stumps down off his own bowling. Logan is only in Year 7 and showed he will be a solid player in the years to come. Bowral High set us 110 to win the game. The boys did well with the bat finishing up 9 runs short all out for 101. Connor Healey carried over his form from the 1st match smashing 28 not out.
Overall it was a great day enjoyed by the students. Some of the grounds up the highlands looked beautiful after the rain. If we had a full team I’m confident we would’ve won at least 1 of our matches. . Hope to see all the boys back for more cricket next year.
Davidson Sheild
Our Senior Boys Cricket side took on Illawarra Sports High School In the statewide Davidson Shield Knockout. We won the toss and were batting first. Captain Michael Tulley looked set for a big score but when he was bowled for 22, there wasn’t much more resistance. The team was all out for 48. Michael Tulley stepped up with the ball, taking 2 wickets in the 1st over, smashing the stumps twice. Ben Pemberton bowled an excellent line and length to claim 4/7. The opposition got our score with 4 wickets left. Definitley a match that we could’ve won if we got a few more runs in our innings.

The first game was against Kanahooka High School. The team started strong by gaining an early lead before going down by 12 points in the end. In the second game vs Dapto High School, the team finished the first half with an impressive 21-18 lead at the break. Every player moved well on offence and was committed on defense; however, Dapto made a late comeback and won the elimination game 41-35.
We are proud of our senior boys team and the growing strength of our basketball program here at Lake Illawarra High School.

YEAR 11 SLR OUT RECREATION ADVENTURE DAY
Year 11 SLR adventured through the rainforest on the 25th of February. The group abseiled through waterfalls along the Macquarie Rivulet with confidence. A big well done to the resilience of the students on a challenging but amazing day. It was an exceptional opportunity for our students that taught the group many skills like cooperation, teamwork, determination and confidence.
School Sport
Our school is blessed to have a coastal location and excellent weather coming back into term 1. We are taking full advantage of the excellent weather and opportunities in the local area with thrilling sports for the students. Learn to surf has been an excellent opportunity for the students brought out a sense of accomplishment and confidence. Cycling has also been great fun, with students able to see more of the local area while being active.
Clean Up Australia Day
The PDHPE classes were certainly very busy during week 6 cleaning up our beautiful lake. Throughout week 6 the PDHPE classes walked around the outskirts of the lake picking up the rubbish. An interesting discovery was that at first glance the cycleway and lake appears rather clean, however, we were surprised to find a significant amount of rubbish in the bushland areas prompting us to get cleaning throughout the whole week and not just on the Monday as planned. Well done to all our students and teachers.
Oz Tag Gala Day
We would like to congratulate all the students who attended the Oz Tag Gala day on Tuesday of week 7. This year we had over 75 students attend the gala day and was without doubt the best year yet in terms of student commitment, teamwork and positive attitude. WELL DONE

Smashed
Tuesday the 3rd March, Years 8 and 9 students were audience to the production ‘Smashed’. This global theatre-in-education program, aims to break the culture of underage drinking and reduce alcohol related harm among young people around the world.
Smashed Australia is a hard-hitting interactive multi-media performance that uses the experience of three credible teenage characters to explore the dangers and consequences that alcohol can have on a young person’s life. The characters relationships, health, safety and career aspirations are all put in jeopardy by the decisions they make as a result of peer pressure to engage in underage drinking. The audience interact with the characters and are challenged by our facilitators to offer advice and are encouraged to discover realistic ways to deal with peer pressure which empowers them to behave responsibly and make healthy life choices.
This educational experience provided students with;
- An increase in knowledge and understanding of the dangers of underage drinking.
- An increase in knowledge and understanding of the reasons why some young people drink alcohol underage, particularly peer pressure.
- An increase in confidence to make responsible choices around alcohol.
- An increased awareness of local resources and services available to young people if they have been affected by alcohol.
Students and staff found the production to be both informative and enjoyable. The students had very positive feedback. Overall, a very worthwhile learning experience.
