Career exploration events coming up soon at Wanganui Park

Everyone can only make their career decisions based on what we actually get to ‘experience’. You can only know what you come into contact with. Usually this is limited to our experiences through family, friends or activities we participate in at school.

The Better Together Alliance have been really fortunate to secure a whole range of career exploration activities for our students. Most involve no cost (even the bus costs are covered by other parties).

Generally, these target Year 9 & 10’s because they are timed to align with when students are selecting subjects that may pathway to careers. From time to time other opportunities do come along for younger and older students. We rely on students to listen to the bulletin (in morning Home Group) to learn about these opportunities or for families to become aware of them via the Wanganui Careers Facebook page or these newsletters.

In the next six weeks there are some incredible opportunities, encourage your child to explore these. They must get permission forms from Mr Crosbie in the SLC. They are filled on a fist come first served basis.

  • JefThomson careers experience – Thurs. 14th March. Mr Crosbie’s Careers class (Yr 10’s) will be touring orchards, packing and sorting sheds and transport facilities of the 2nd largest employer in our region. They’ll explore horticultural, manufacturing, administration, transport & logistic careers and be treated to seeing things others don’t often get to see.
  • Metro Tunnel careers experience – Tues. 19th March. What an amazing opportunity to see the once-in-a-lifetime build of infrastructure others won’t see until it opens. Three of our students (9 & 10’s) will explore construction, building, designing careers up close. Meeting engineers, tradespeople, designers, planners and others who’ll explain their career journey
  • Rail careers experience – Wed 3rd April. 11 of our Yr 9 & 10’s will be taken to the Newport headquarters of the Rail network. They’ll visit ‘the ‘Rail Academy’ and experience a wide variety of careers that involve: using your hands, building, construction, fabrication, machining, working with metal and other materials, designing and using virtual reality. I’d strongly encourage any young person with an interest in engineering, fabrication, machining, design, construction or just not sure what they are interested in to take up this opportunity. It is something that we haven’t had available to our students before and they will never know what they might find out.  There is no cost
  • Reserve Bank of Australia careers experience – Thurs. 4th April. Five of our year 9 & 10’s will get to explore a whole range of careers in the world of economics. While any student probably has little experience with economics, banking, finance, management, administration there are a wide variety of careers. I would strongly encourage any young person with an interest in economics, finance, banking, investment (or just not sure what they are interested) in to take up this opportunity. It is something that we haven’t had available to our students before and they will never know what they might find out. There is no cost
