Jessica Mauboy

Jessica Mauboy is an indigenous Australian actress, songwriter and singer. She became famous for her talent in 2006, when she was interviewed for the fourth season of ‘Australian Idol.’ Even though that was a long time ago, her passion for music still inspires people all over Australia.

Jessica was born in 1989 in Darwin, Northern Territory. Her father, Ferdy, was Indonesian, however her mother  Therese grew up with the Kuku Yalanji people from North Queensland. From an early age, she was a member of the church choir with her grandmother Harriet. Their house was the noisiest on the block when her family shared their passion for music!

When Jessica was fourteen years old, she performed in the Tamworth Country Music Festival in New South Wales. As the winner, she went to Sydney to see what else she could do. Her breathtaking performances earned her a recording deal with Sony Music Australia. Jessica released a country themed remix of Cyndi Lauper’s hit ‘Girls Just Wanna Have Fun', but the song was unsuccessful. Feeling disappointed, Jessica moved back to Darwin.

In 2006, Jessica Maubouy auditioned for the fourth season of ‘Australian Idol in Alice Springs, Northern Territory. After an incredible performance of Whitney Houston’s ‘I Have Nothing’ and impressing all three judges, Jessica moved on to the semifinals, then to the top twelve. The media knew of her expired Sony contract and tried to use it against her to prove that she shouldn’t progress any further, but the producer refused to take her off the show.

It didn’t take long for Jessica to sign another Sony Music Australia contract. Since then, she has released some splendid albums, including 2007 ‘The Journey’ and 2007 ‘New Attitude’. Both albums were smashing successes.

Thanks to her marvelous talent, Jessica Maubouy is now known all over the world. Her hard work has truly paid off. I know that she’s already done so much, but I’m sure there’s still more to come! I can’t wait to see what she’ll do next!
