Year 7 Cricket

Our final Interschool event of the day was the State Finals for both Year 7 and 8 Cricket. While the Year 8’s did not make the Grand Final (winning 1 out of their 3 pool games), the Year 7 team were crowned State Champions for 2019 after a dominant performance against schools from Strathmore, Mt Waverley, Echuca and Shepperton.

The team was always going to perform well, with no weak links in bowling or batting across the 10 athletes. Every player played their vital role across the day with some of the following key moments making the ESPN highlight reel (if it existed):

Sinead’s sharp catch in Rnd 1 turned out to be the difference as we won by 4 runs (wickets are worth 5 runs to us and we only took 1 that game)

Maggie’s doubled 4 runs off a no ball (10 runs in total) in a batting partnership with Bronte in the same game

Phoebe and Lily’s sneaky 1’s on every ball

Emma’s leadership with her voice while batting or fielding

All students should be proud of their efforts during the whole season and thoroughly deserve their gold medals!!

Cricket State Finals

It was the day of state finals for cricket, and everyone was excited but still nervous at the same time. The Year 7 and Year 8 Cricket Team as well as Mr Fero-Kovassy and Mr O, were on the road in the bus at 8:35am, as we travelled to McDonell Park in Northcote. The energy levels were raised in the bus as you could hear tik tok songs in the background as well as laughter and chat. Once we arrived at our destination, we all got out of the bus, and put all our bags and equipment in our little area. The cool breeze brushed against everyone and the excitement rose in the air as we nearly started our first match. Sooner than you know it, the game was under away and everyone was focused and ready for anything. After both innings and great captaining from Lily, we had found out that we won by four runs and we would have lost if it wasn’t for Sinead’s wonderful wicket.

We had a small snack before our next match, and there was talk and encouragement from the team, as well as a few cookies which were handed out (thanks Bronte). In our second match with Bronte as captain, we won by a fair bit, Maggie and Bronte both bowling and batting very well, and some great boundary hits from everyone. We then had our lunch and some packets of lollies which made some people go a bit crazy as we awaited our last game until finals. In the match, everyone had improved so much from the previous games and our fielding and catching was quick and sharp. To our surprise we won, as the team made about 100 runs, with 7 wickets beating our opponents, and some great talking from the captain Maggie. Sadly, the Year 8 team did not make the final, but were still lucky for getting 7-11 slurpees.

From that match, we had then realised that we were in the final for State Cricket, and that there was only a matter of time that decided our fate of which we stood, in the competition. The nerves and expectations to do well, rose to its highest point as we started the final. Unfortunately, the other team had got quite a few wickets and was very well at fielding. Although this occurred, our team still pushed through and we were determined not to give up. We knew that we had to be as spot on with our fielding and catching and trying to keep them doing as little runs as possible. As the final closed there was excitement, nervousness and a bit of doubt towards the outcome.

The time had come. Both teams stood in separate groups waiting for the news to come. Mr Fero-Kovassy read out the results and WE WON!! We were State Champions!! All of us cheered and jumped in excitement as we looked like monkeys on a sugar high. We could not believe the results and we were all over the moon. We definitely could not have gotten these results if it weren’t to our amazing coaches, Ava and Tara as well as Ms T. Watch out everyone, State Champions, Phoebe Bullock, Lily Murrihy, Josie Lennon, Jade Simoni, Anika Scully, Pia Juricic, Sinead Mcclay, Bronte Mosley, Maggie Phillip and myself Emma Watkins are coming for you!!
