FIRST Lego League

On Wednesday, 13th of November, our two Lego League teams went to KIOSC in Wantirna to compete against many other schools for a variety of awards. The students had to compete in 4 categories:

  • Robot design – students were required to build a functional robot to meet the demands of this year’s challenges.
  • Robot game – the robot had to be programmed to complete a number of challenges on a course around the theme of City Shaper.
  • Innovation project – each team had to find a solution to a problem they have identified with a building or open space in their community
  • Core values – the FIRST core values are discovery, innovation, impact, inclusion, teamwork and fun – students were required to demonstrate these values throughout the competition.

The students worked hard since the start of August to prepare for the event. Each team did a fantastic job in front of the judges and in the robot game.

At the awards ceremony, our Robot Army team of Xin, Nandini, Priya, Dorace, Isabel, Samira, Claudia, Alex and Sienna won the Research Award for their project on “The Tap App” – tool to locate drinking taps around Melbourne.

The Mindstormers team of Scarlet, Imogen, Ella, Parker, Quinn, Julia, Maya, Mashia, and Kimmy won the Strategy and Innovation Award for the programming they created for their robot. Both teams also were selected to go through to the National event.

The students competed at the Australian National Finals – South against other 44 other teams from South Australia, Tasmania and Victoria. The judging went really well, and the teams were very happy with their performance. We picked up no more awards but had a huge amount of fun!

Congratulations to all the students, teachers and mentors who helped our teams this year. Roll on 2020. Also, a huge thank you to all the staff who volunteered to help out at the Richmond Regional Lego League event held here at MGC.

More WISE winners

Congratulations to Felicia Yang, Jessica Liu and Niann Lu for taking first prize in the WISE video submissions competition. Students who competed in the Women in STEM and Entrepreneurship program but did not win the first prize of a trip to Silicon Valley, were encouraged to continue developing their ideas and submit a 5 minute video of their product. The prize was a pretty big amount of cash. Congratulations girls!
