Level 2

In Year 2 Maths Innovation, students will be developing a deeper understanding of important traits of an innovator: Courageous, Determined, Reflective, Collaborative and Visionary. Students will be introduced to the ‘CUBES’ and ‘RUCSAC strategy to help them understand how to solve worded problems. They will be taking part in the Maths Explorer Competition which will give them the opportunity to solve a range of complex worded problems. Students will be collaborating with their peers to explain their thinking and their approach to solving these problems. Students will also be undertaking some investigations connected to the area and perimeter of shapes.

Level 3

In Mathematics Innovation, the students of Year Three will be working on a variety of strategies to solve worded problems. They will be using techniques such as CUBES or RUCSAC to discover what the important information is and what the question is asking. The students will be able to transfer this learning to other areas of learning to the Four Operations. They will be taking part in the Maths Explorer Competiton which is designed to provide challenge by solving multi- step worded problems. It provides opportunities to practice Problem Solving and Reasoning using a range of strategies. Students will then be able to continue to extend their understanding on Multiplication and Division as we look at different Problem-Solving strategies as well as work on their Fluency and Understanding of the concepts.

Level 4

In Year 4 Maths Innovation, students will be working on their goals to develop the important traits of an innovator: Courageous, Determined, Reflective, Collaborative and Visionary. They will be exploring how to solve complex worded problems as the participate in the Maths Games. During lessons they will be applying strategies of ‘CUBES’ and ‘RUCSAC’ to support them to understand the important information, what the question is asking them to do and to check that their answer is reasonable. Students will also be exploring how we can use mathematics to evaluate our environmental impact by considering our paper usage and paper recycling volume. Additionally, they will investigate the angles of polygons and create tessellations.

Level 5

In Year 5 Maths Innovation, students will be working on their goals to develop the important traits of an innovator: Courageous, Determined, Reflective, Collaborative and Visionary. Students will be considering how mathematics connects to the environment, by estimate the number of leaves on a tree, the surface area of a leaf and therefore the total surface area of the leaves. They will also estimate the number of breaths they take per day and the amount of Oxygen required for this to occur. They can also consider how much Oxygen one tree contributes to the atmosphere. Students will also investigate ‘Spiorolaterals’ which allows them to use location, shape and angle knowledge. They will then be programming the shapes using the robots. Students will also explore a strategy game called Nim.

Level 6

In Year 6 Maths Innovation, students will build upon the investigation into the measurements and relationships of circles from Term 1 and will measure and calculate the volume of water in the school water tank, thinking about the units that can be used to measure volume (cm3, m3 and L) and visualising how big one of each unit is. Students will estimate the area of the ELC roof and calculate how much water falls on the roof if 1mm of rain falls at GWPS. We will also be discussing where how the water gets into the tank, what it is used for and how the precious water that we use through the taps comes from. Students will also be exploring Pythagoras’ Rule, investigating the history, completing some proofs, and using the relationship to solve equations. There will be a game that we will play that will allow us to consider the permutations and combinations of a set of numbers. Threaded through all of our learning, students will be enhancing the important traits of an innovator: Courageous, Determined, Reflective, Collaborative and Visionary.
