Robotics and Coding Innovation

By Mrs Nicole Pryde

Level 1 and 2

This term in Robotics Innovation, Year 1 and Year 2 students are learning how to code and program the Dash robots. Last term we utilised the Sphero robots with a focus on understanding the ‘Draw’ canvas, whereas this term we turn our focus to understanding how to use the ‘Block’ canvas. Students are building up their coding skills by working through a series of puzzles on the Blockly App, that identifies the use of coding features such as control, lights, sounds, drive and animation to begin with. Innovators are finding themselves within a productive struggle as they discover different coding commands that they have not yet used before.

Level 5 and 6

Year 5 and 6 Robotics Innovation students are continuing their unit using the Spike Prime Lego kits. They are currently identifying what a CNC machine is and following a build process to define a problem from a given solution. Lots of collaboration and rich discussion amongst the students has helped them to move through the different sections of the Learning Pit. To finish the unit, students will have the opportunity to identify a real-world problem and design and build a solution of a robotic arm to help somebody perform a function.
