English Innovation

By Mrs Anat Garzberg Grant and Mrs Belinda Gunstone

Level 2

In English Innovation, Year two students will utilise the strategies from published authors of texts such as ‘The Gruffalo’ and ‘Molly Mischeif’ to engage their readers. The intention will be to generate engagement and build a ‘brain to brain’ connection with the reader.  In addition, they will analyse their own writing pieces and generate goals for their authorship, connected to their in-class learning. Learners will also have the opportunity to use visuals from the text ‘Imagine a Day’ to enhance their written vocabulary. To generate student voice and transfer their learning, students will choose how they wish to share their authorship, including the audience and purpose, before sharing a celebration piece with their families.

Level 3

In English Innovation, the students will analyse the content and structure of non-fiction texts.  Using this information they will write non-fiction texts, presenting it as an informative poster display. The students will then focus on the craft of poetry writing. The craft of writing is the essential element that guides the reader to the expected style of poetry. They will explore poetic devices and analyse the personal impact of these devices. From this knowledge, the students will write poetry pieces, working both individually and with others in the group.

Level 4

In English Innovation, the students are creating non-fiction texts, freely exploring individual styles of non-fiction writing and presenting it in their chosen mode. The students will also be producing writing pieces, with the focus to entertain the students in prep. From this, the students are presenting their wonderful writing pieces to a prep class. As well as this, they will explore poetic devices and structures, and will write poetry for a poetry competition.

Level 5

The year 5 students are producing writing pieces, which convey the messages of what really matters to them, in a range of genres. The students will display their work, to show their wonderful achievements in writing.  The students will produce non-fiction projects, presenting their explorations, in a range of multi-modal writing pieces. They will also create magnificent literary texts using fantasy settings and characters.

Level 6

In English Innovation, the year 6 students are creating individual and meaningful writing pieces, in their chosen genre, that they connect personally with and expresses their authors’ voice. These writing pieces will be collated to display their fantastic work. The students will research articles about space and create a review of an article to generate a bank of quality rated articles as source material. Using this verified information, they will develop non-fiction texts about space, showcasing their explorations to their peers, in a range of multi-modal writing pieces.
