Northcote High School recently sent 4 teams (2x Boys, 2x Girls) to the Intermediate Basketball Divisional Competition. All teams went undefeated on the day, with both of our A teams winning their respective finals against tough opponents. In addition to their on court performance, their support for one another and fair play was also exceptional — well done everyone!

On August 2 we ran our junior basketball selection tournament. This tournament saw 160 Year 7s and Year 8s trying out for our Divisional Teams. The day was a great success with the help of staff and our student helpers – Willow Clarke, Pheobe Hargreaves, Jess McKain, Asher Oakley, Rosie O’Loughlin, Zoe Panagiotopoulos, Finley Stoilovski and Ella Taylor. All teams have been posted on your Year Level page on Teams.
The intermediate girls footy team won the Northern Metro Region final against Hazel Glen in resounding fashion, with a final score of 7.8.50 to 1.5.11. Despite a very even, team performance, some individual shout-outs need acknowledging: Meg Orr lead from the backline, mopping up any chances Hazel Glen had to attack; Jade Williams played an inspiring 3rd quarter, kicking 3 goals, before unfortunately injuring her ankle; Jess McKain was thrown into the ruck and competed well all game despite being undersized; and finally, soccer player Lily Sibillin needs to seriously consider crossing codes, after dominating as a midfielder all game. State awaited the girls on Tuesday 8 August.
State competition occurred a week after the region final, which was not long enough for a few crucial injured players to return, so with a somewhat depleted side we headed to Ballarat for the State semi and quarter finals. First up was Emmanuel College from Warnambool. The Northcote girls dominated from the outset, resulting in a big win of 83-1, getting the team to the Semi final where Maribyrnong College awaited. Being a sports school with infinite funding and resources, Maribyrnong was always going to be a tough match up. Bigger and stronger bodies all around the ground made it hard work for the Northcote girls against some talented athletes. Final score Maribyrnong 78, Northcote 9. A few more injuries throughout the day made for a sore and long bus ride home, but the girls should be incredibly proud to have made it as far as they did.

Well done to our Senior Boys Hockey team when they recently competed in the Regional Competition at Greensborough Hockey club. The boys played some very competitive hockey, but could not beat the accuracy on goals, of Richmond High and Hume Anglican Grammar.
The Northcote Year 8 table tennis team arrived at the Divisional competition in high spirits and playing some great table tennis with hopes of making it through to the Regional competition. The day started off well with the boys A and B team comfortably winning their opening games against opposing schools. The boys went on to make the finals in both divisions without a single loss on their score sheets. They overcame their opponents again in straight sets to make it through to the next stage.
The girls A team played some terrific table tennis and each player got better as the day went on. Some of them had very little table tennis experienced however they progressed to the finals with only losing 1 match within the team. After a hard fought match against Thornbury the girls sadly went down but can still hold their heads high after showing some real skill and sportsmanship throughout the day. A special thanks goes out to out student coaches Isaac Bartley and Sam Heaton for helping organise and coach the boys to their victories.

Last Thursday, the Intermediate girls soccer team headed to DISC to compete in the regional soccer. The year 9&10 girls came up against tough opposition across the day, but showed their class winning all 3 of their pool games, beating Hume, Viewbank and Brunswick. They then faced off in the final against St Helena, who had won the other pool. It was a hard-fought match and the teams couldn’t be separated after regular time, with the game going to extra time and Northcote prevailing and winning a tight game 2-1. Everyone played really well throughout the day, but there were some standout performances from Lily Sibillin, Emily Togneri and Indigo Rodger.

Another entertaining and drama-filled day for the intermediate boys soccer team making the final of the regional stage. Topping a very competitive group going from last to first in their group with a late penalty in the group stage. The final against Aitken College saw big chances fall to both sides and a good strike lead to the loss. Jack Cuteri coached and managed the side extremely well across the 8 games.
Results : 1-1 draw with Edgars Creek. 0-0 draw with Viewbank. 1-0 win vs Richmond High School. 1-0 loss in final to Aitken College.

The Year 8 boys' soccer northern metropolitan region tournament showcased matches filled with passion and skill. The boys played 4 matches in total, working their way to the final to eventually defeat Eltham High 4-0. The day highlighted great performances, both in offense and defense, with a few parent spectators helping cheer on the team. With impressive victories, our team secured a spot in the state finals scheduled for September. As they continue to train and refine their strategies, the Year 8 boys are poised to conquer the state finals. A special shout out to Asher Oakley for some expert coaching and all the boys for working so well as a united force.
