James Morrison Visits Girton Students
On Monday 10th October, we were delighted to welcome James Morrison to Girton to conduct a workshop with the Girton Big Band and speak to our Senior School musicians about his career and performance life.
The Big Band played Hit The Bricks by Gordon Goodwin and James talked to the students about musical leadership and the structures within the Big Band setting. He also spoke about the nature of improvising and how we view our practice as musicians. He was so inspiring because he has a unique perspective on the way that musicians view and create music.
He played a solo with the Girton Big Band in Hit The Bricks and we were all blown away by his sound and skill.
The Girton Big Band also played music from The Incredibles by Michael Giacchino. James spoke about tuning and envisaging the sound you want before you play it. James addressed many big ideas when it comes to creating and performing and his clear passion for his art was contagious. Girton Big Band leader Mr Josh McGuffie expressed, “It was a wonderful workshop that focused on musicianship and musicality, and was beneficial for all, not just Big Band or jazz students.”
The Girton Music Department would like to thank the Rotary Club of Bendigo South for bringing this opportunity to our school and to James Morrison for so generously giving his knowledge and expertise.
