Thank you, Betty Higgs

They say that those with talents should share them, and if the talent is musical, then at Girton, it is expected that the talent is shared broadly and often. For more than thirty years, Mrs Betty Higgs has shared music through individual piano tuition, by supporting students who are performing, and by playing the piano at innumerable school events. 

Over the years, many music staff have worked alongside Betty playing recitals, making recordings, playing musicals, performing at Open Days, Carols Services, Foundation Day and assemblies, and sharing in student success. Those who have shared a stage or a moment with Betty say that the relationship quickly moves past the professional to the personal, making Betty a memorable character who will be dearly missed when she leaves her beloved school. 

Betty started at Girton in its first year as a Grammar School (1993) as a part-time sessional piano instructor. Her husband, John Higgs OAM, was the founding Chair of the Board and together, the Higgs family advocated strongly for high standards and quality education. With two children at the School, (Eddie and Alexia), both in various student leadership positions, the Higgs family quickly became synonymous with Girton Grammar School and in 1999, the Hall was officially named the John E. Higgs Hall, where Betty has performed countless times for thousands of people. 

By 1998 Betty was teaching piano full time at Girton and then in 2001, she was appointed to the position of Head of Instrumental Music. In 2007 she was Awarded the Boards’ prize for a member of staff who has shown particular excellence in a specific area of the School’s activity.

Betty can be relied upon to notice and comment on positive aspects of any given day, bringing a sense of optimism and positivity to daily interactions with colleagues and students. She lavishes praise on those around her, instilling in them a sense of worth and lifting the spirits of everyone around her. Betty is organised and passionate about her teaching and she is committed to all aspects of her work, whether it be with students in Prep or Year 12. With a can-do attitude for which she is deeply respected, sharp wit and a natural sense of care, she is an asset to the school in immeasurable ways, well beyond her considerable gift of music making. 

Whether it be her accompanying skills or teaching abilities, Betty’s impact is personal and profound. She cares deeply about all aspects of her role as a Girton staff member and freely shares her love of the School and the School’s history. The School owes much to the Higgs family whose stoic and resilient nature has always underscored a level of dedication and vision that has allowed the school to grow and prosper since its foundation. 

Betty has influenced the lives of thousands of staff and students at Girton and for many, the School will not be the same without her. We thank Betty for her loyal and passionate service to Girton and wish her all the best as she immerses in the lives of her children and grandchildren and enjoys spending more time on her passions including, travel, gallery visits, gardening, ballet concerts, and supporting the Collingwood Football Club.
