Division Senior Football – Thursday 12th May

After an interesting start to the day with multiple senior players pulling out, our Year 11 * 12 team was a bit depleted. However, this did not deter the spirit of our team of 14 strong players. We had one game for the day and the winner took the right to compete at Regionals. Fortunately, our pure grit and determination for the game saw MGC win in a tight contest with 7 goals to 4 against Princes Hill SC. Thanks to Abi for taking the lead with the team in a successful hit out. Congratulations to Greta Nibali, Amelie Kamberis, Abi Marsland, Imogen Cain, Mim Suares-Jury, Holly Kearton, Sass Walker, Liv Jackson, Emma Meggs, Maya Kirkpatrick, Lola Nibali, Alana Archer and Harriet Jones on a super effort to win with a small amount of numbers. Incredible effort - A special mention to Mrs. B and Niamh G for taking out students to Royal Park for the day.

Division Athletics – Thursday 17th May

On a magnificent morning, our team of 57 strong athletes, headed up the road to Collingwood Harriers Athletics club. The team was buzzing with excitement following the recent athletics day where they earned a spot in our competitive team. And did our students do us proud? Yes they did! In not only the form of happy smiles, but in their supreme efforts in both individual and team events. Blue ribbons were the theme of the day with many students returning to the team base from successful throws, puts, jumps, sprints, walks and speed events. A special mention to Alina Ivanova who seriously turned heads as she ran the 15 years 100m sprint in 12.36s. Onlookers were overheard on the fence saying, ‘Did you say that girl run?!’. Alina also backed up the 200m run with another first place. Individuals that dominated the track and field were first timer, Eve Fumberger in four separate 13 years events winning long jump, triple jump, high jump and the 100m sprint. Ella Duncan was also successful in winning three 14 years events in long jump, triple jump and high jump. Erica Brown-Yamada was also a three-time winner in the 18 years triple jump, 200m and 1500m walk. Our long-distance runners also ran incredible times with Gracie Lourey (800m & 1500m – 5:34.52) and Luca Sherman (1500m & 3000m – 11:18.91) winning by considerable lengths. Perhaps the most special part of the day came down to the team 4x100m relay events where MGC won all 6 races in stella fashion. Amazing work to the team! A big thank you to Trevor Howlett as well for announcing all day and his work at the conclusion of the carnival. Students will now compete at Regional Level Athletics on Wednesday 31st August at Meadowglen International Athletics Stadium.

Intermediate Sport Day (Year 9 & 10) - Thursday 19th May

Netball at MGC – By Eva Donnelly

The 2021 lockdown had our netball teams unable to compete at regional finals which lead our 2022 teams wanting to play as hard as they could. The first games started off with a bang and every player was already exceeding expectations on court. About halfway through the day, rain started pouring, but that didn’t stop anyone from playing their best and having a great time. Both MGC A and B teams were having a blast in their match against each other, where at the start it looked like either of the teams could have won. The A teams birthday girl, Hannah Scothern, pulling out some amazing intercepts in defence, alongside Lucy Mansfield. The attacking end was on fire with the help of mid-court, rarely missing goals. MGC social teams were smashing it out during the day, not letting the midday rain effect their moods or their play. MGC B team were working so well together and kept it consistent all day with incredible defence and amazing attack, moving smoothly down the court. The last game of the day was the toughest. MGC A vs Richmond High. The game started off rocky with MGC losing the first centre pass, but quickly getting it back into the shooting third. Richmond had no intention of losing this game, but neither did MGC. Both ends defenders were hard to break down making the ball go up and down the court for the first quarter. MGC kept pushed through and brought out their A-game, resulting in a. very happy win for the girls. The day ended off very nicely for both competitive teams. The social teams continuing to play a few more games. Congratulations MGC A team for making it to the next round and big thanks to Carmen Sjoblom for coaching the girls.

Soccer at Princes Park – By Alex McCurry

On the 19th of May a group of amazing year 9’s and 10’s headed to Princes Park to play division soccer. We had two teams and while unfortunately neither got through to the next round we had a great time. Team 1 lost their first two games with a score of 1-nil but played very strongly and the third game they won two-nil. Team 2 lost the first two games but had a great win during the third game. The last game was the most fun, as MGC’s two teams went head-to-head. Team 1 emerged victorious but team 2 played exceptionally well. Overall, it was a nice break from our typical Thursday and it was wonderful to represent MGC at division soccer.

Badminton at MGC – By Ozge Duman

The morning started off chilly, but the rest of the day was fantastic. In the MGC stadium, the badminton matches involved lots of friendly competition, teams of high spirit and signs of etiquettes which made the day very enjoyable. Although there was a lot of difficult competition, our team, the A team, managed to win. Our squad was pleased to advance to regionals. It felt great being a part supportive, productive community. Congratulations to the A and B teams on their achievements. A big thanks to our coaches and staff for organising the day and hopefully we will continue to achieve great victories!

Year 8 Sport Day - Wednesday 25th May

Netball at MGC

Once again MGC hosted the Year 8 netballers on our wonderful facilities here at school. A team that was locked down from plating in Year 7 the year before, finally got their opportunity to play this year. Our A and B teams relished the opportunity and played some very competitive netball across the day. The B team had strong wins against multiple schools but went down to Brunswick in a tightly contested game. Our schools teams also battled each other and the A team came out on top in this showing. Finally, the final was against Brunswick and our A team where we came out the victors. It was a tight contest in the first half and Brunswick hit the lead on multiple occasions. Our coaches made some adjustments in the second half and the team pulled it back to win by a few goals in the end. On the social courts, we had 1 team play against the other schools and all students had a great day out. The social team won many matches for the day. A big thank you to Mr. Fero-Kovassy for running the competition, with our student teacher Michael and Niamh organising the social competition outside on the courts. Congratulations to the A team in Sarah Elmes, Felicity Comerford, Parnika Kulgod, Coco Murrihy, Mikayla White, Nova Karikari, Sophie Elmes, Lucy Crouch and Tess Trigger and their coaches Olivia Cavka and Lucy Mansfield. Well done to all Year 9-12 umpires that gave up classes to referee to a high standard. Particularly, Abi Marsland and Rebecca Gibson who gave up Year 12 VCE classes to assist. Thanks to Luca Sherman, and Eva Donnelly, Estelle Paul and Gabby Simcox, Heidi Junge and Maddy Van Vliet also. Your help is greatly appreciated, and competitions don’t run without you! The team will now play at regional level on Monday 15th August at NETS stadium, Macleod.

Soccer at Princes Park

Our students had a nice day out to Princes Park for soccer. MGC took a team of 15 students to compete against Uni HS, Princes Hill, Brunswick and Fitzroy for the day. MGC defeated Fitzroy and Uni high in strong performances. Unfortunately, we went down to Princes Hill and Brunswick in tough battles. Brunswick were crowned the winners in the end. Thanks to our Year 9/10 coaches in, Sabina Koch, Scarlet Cusmano who were amazing on the day in rallying our teams. Also thanks to Demi Contos and Olivia Mangonis for assisting. Another thanks goes to Mrs. B and Thea R for taking our students for the day out.

Badminton at University of Melbourne

Our team of 6 strong badminton players travelled to Melbourne University to play in the competitive badminton competition. By all reports our team dominated the competition by losing only 1 game for the entire day. Defeating Brunswick, Princes Hill and Uni High in a best of 4 style games. Congratulations goes to Emily Pham, Amelia Gaal, Jollie Tong, Jennifer Hwang, Chiara Virtuoso and Ashe Tan. Thank you to Darcy Lynch from our school office for her inspirational coaching on the day – the team couldn’t have done it without you. The team will now play regional level on Thursday the 25th August at Darebin Community Sports Stadium.

Social Badminton

Our social teams also had a nice day out up at Heidelberg Badminton Centre. A purpose built 12 court badminton centre that hosted some great battles across the day. Our teams of 11 pairs had a lot of fun as they played all other schools in our division. At the end of the day, the final round saw the best pairs play off against each other to be crowned 1st in their respective girls/mixed competitions. MGC were crowned number 1, 2 and 3 at the end of the final round. Well done to our pairs on a great day. As noted by all schools, our year 8’s displayed incredible enthusiasm and behaviour across all competitions which was great to hear.

Division X-Country - Tuesday 31st May

On the coldest Melbourne day of the year, a wet weather forecast would not deter our Division team of 25 passionate runners! This was fantastic to see over at Princes Park where all runners in each age group pushed themselves hard in an attempt to qualify for Regional level in a couple of weeks’ time. Individual efforts saw the April Penaia win the 13 years race in a strong performance. The same situation occurred in the 14 years race where Tess Trigger won her event comfortably. And finally, a familiar name from Division Athletics long distance events, Luca Sherman, also won her 16 years race. A big thanks to Miss. Exner and Mrs. B for taking our team to Carlton North and for providing them with advice and coaching tips with amazing wisdom. Regional X-Country will take place at Bundoora Park on Wednesday 15th June in week 8 this term.
