Year 9 : What’s happening?

(All pieces were written by Year 9 students)

Academic

Marine Biology students at the aquarium

The past 5 weeks held a lot of tests and exams, which was quite stressful for some. Us year nines had our last NAPLAN ever (!), as well as math tests, which were challenging, learning tasks for WOI and math midterm exams approaching. Everyone in year nine worked very hard studying for these tests. We have several upcoming assessments, then we will be starting a brand-new semester with fresh electives! On the note of electives, we had a forensic science incursion, many aquarium visits for the marine biology classes, as well as an approaching outdoor education camp encouraging students to explore the wilderness and to build teamwork skills. We have been planning for future careers by taking the Morrisby exam and discussing with our career counsellors here at MGC.

Clubs

Year 9s participating in the Environment Team’s “dunkatron”

MGC has a variety of clubs on offer. They have the environment club, book club, chess club, and many more. The clubs here are fantastic. There is also diversity and philanthropy club. They are responsible for the donations that come in and out of the school and choose what charitable events to focus on, such as Leukemia Foundation, brain cancer research and Harmony Day. Band, that practices at lunch and create the music for the school’s performances. This can all be read about in the performing arts section. There are many more opportunities that the school can offer and help to broaden the horizons of its students.

Dance night

Year 9 dance students

During term 1 & 2 students from year 7, 8 and 9 have been working before and after school with dance teachers from outside of the school to learn and choregraph dances to perform at the MGC Dance Night, that was showcased on Friday the 27th of May. During that night we saw lots of dances ranging from year 9 self-choregraphed dances, to the VCE solo dances performed by senior years. All of the students and teachers have put lots of time to learn, rehearse and perform all of these dances to perfection. There were many amazing dances performed throughout the night including some beautiful VCE dances. Thanks to Ms McGeechan and all dance teachers who helped put semester 1 MGC dance night.

Rowing

 Year 9 rowers

Last term MGC rowers had their final regatta of the season which went over 3 days in Geelong. After that event, the rowing competition season stopped. In term 2, MGC offers an optional development squad combining training in water and on land. There is one water session a week and it allows new and old rowers to gain their knowledge in rowing and to improve. There also is an opportunity for rowers to use the smaller boats that were not available to use last season. During the land sessions, the focus is to build up the fitness levels that we were at last season and strengthen some more. There are two land sessions a week. Overall rowing is such a great opportunity to make new friends and it’s such a fun experience that we all enjoy!
