Port Adelaide has claimed Tasmanian defender Tom McCallum with its first pick in the 2022 NAB AFL National Draft on Tuesday night.

McCallum’s name was called with pick 36 as the club entered the draft on its second night.

The 18-year-old is renowned for his burst of speed, running capacity and ability to play on either tall or small forwards.

McCallum displayed his strong intercept marking and rebound from the backline playing for the Allies in the under 18 National Championship, where he averaged 17 disposals. 

AFL Talent Ambassador Kevin Sheehan likened McCallum to Sydney backman Tom McCartin but he has also drawn comparisons to Collingwood’s Isaac Quaynor.
