At today's Assembly the students from 5G shared a timeline of events leading to an important part of Western Australia’s history, The Swan River Settlement. The students have been learning about the significant people who played an important role in making our city the place it is today.

Thank you to Ms O’Connor and Year 5G who reminded us of how fortunate we are to live in this beautiful city.

A big thank you also to Mr Peter Johnston for playing the piano to one of our favourite songs ‘We Are Australian’.

Yesterday students from Year 4-6 participated in the Interhouse Swimming Carnival at Claremont Pools. It was a wonderful day filled with fun and good sportsmanship. Once again Mr Alderman planned a wonderful carnival. Thank you to Mr Alderman, teachers and parents for supporting this event. Congratulations to all the House Captains who helped to organise the swimmers and also encouraged the great cheering in their Houses. A fantastic result by Ward who were our overall winners for the day.

On Friday 22 March we are celebrating Primary House Day. This involves the students participating in activities to learn about the House founders of John XXIII College and to commemorate the House to which they will belong throughout their time at the College.

On the day the students are required to wear their House shirt, sports shorts and school hat. They will need to bring their lunch and water bottle.

The format of Primary House Day includes:

9:00 am 'House Day' Mass - All parents are welcome to join us in the Chapel

10:30 am Students to visit the Year 6 Monster Cake Stall

11:00 am House Day activities – Class Based

12:30 pm Lunch (BYO)

1:30 pm onwards Revolution Sports (Years 5 & 6)

Tabloid Sports (Years 3 & 4)

Bricks 4 Kidz (Year 2)

Moosical Incursion (PP & Year 1)

As part of our celebrations for Primary House Day, our Year Six students are holding a 'Monster Cake Stall' to raise funds for Project Compassion.

The children are welcome to bring along a gold coin/s to buy a special treat for morning tea, prices range from 50c to $2.00.

Futsal Tournament

On Monday, two teams of Year Six students participated in the West Coast Futsal School Titles held at Kingsway Indoor Stadium. The students played in the 12s category and demonstrated an excellent level of skill, as well as fantastic sportsmanship off the court.

Although many teams pulled out of the tournament with short notice, the John XXIII students remained positive and played with passion. They are to be commended for dedicating themselves to early morning training sessions and for representing John XXIII College with pride on the day of the competition.

Congratulations to our Boys team who were the tournament Champions and to Dylan Betts, team captain, who was awarded the Most Valuable Player award.

Sculptures by the Sea

Students from Year 3-6 visited ‘Sculptures by the Sea’ and participated in Focus Tours, where an expert tour guide helped them to view, discuss, think and learn about many of the sculptures in the exhibition. Some of the tour guides are sculptors themselves and all of them had a fountain of knowledge to share and spark the students’ interest in sculpture.

All the tour guides and some members of the public had such positive feedback about the students’ engagement, participation and excellent behaviour, which made me really proud. We are so lucky to experience art on an international level in our own environment and from our follow up activities back at school I know the students have been enriched and inspired by this excursion. Many thanks to the parents and teachers who helped and supported the students on this excursion, it really was appreciated.

Superb Swimming Carnival

Yesterday the Years 4 to 6 students took part in the Inter-House Swimming Carnival. There were some outstanding swimming performances from the competitors. For the first time in well over ten years, the winning house on the day was Ward (332 pts). In 2nd place was Koolyangarra (319), 3rd was Loreto (274), St.Louis (250 ) was 4th, Campion (200) finished 5th and Loyola (173) was in 6th place. This was a tremendous result for Ward!

During the carnival, one record was broken by two Year 6 swimmers in the same race. Sylvia Czajko (Campion) set a record for the Year 6, 50m Girls Freestyle event. Bianca Petsos (Loreto) finished second to Sylvia in the same Freestyle race and she also broke the record. It was an outstanding performance from the two students.

The Carnival ran smoothly thanks to the Staff, the Year 6 House Captains, the wonderful parent helpers and all the swimmers who were well prepared for all their races. The skill, enthusiasm and sportsmanship among the competitors was terrific on the day. Congratulations and thank you to everyone!

The Interschool Carnival will be held next Thursday morning 21 March at the Newman College Pool. All students who qualified for this Carnival will be notified early next week.

There is a very exciting Poster Challenge open to Primary students. All the details are on the flyer, make sure you get your entry in by by Friday 29 March to Main Administration.
