Our school sailing team participated in the School State Team Sailing Championships that were held over the weekend of September 12 and 13. We entered 2 Open and 1 all-girls team this year. After a break from sailing due to COVID-19, it was a fantastic weekend to reconnect with the sailors from other schools and to sail in what was some stunning sailing conditions across the weekend.

At the conclusion of the rounds, all three Friends’ teams found themselves in the finals which was a fantastic effort! Our firsts team led by Rupert Hamilton easily beat the Hutchins Magenta team 3-0 in the semi-finals. Our 2nd Open team led by Eddie Reid then had the harder job of beating the first Hutchins team which they managed to do with a score of 2 race wins to 1 in a big upset! This left our 2 teams from Friends’ sailing against each other in the final. Rupert’s Red team continued to display their dominance by winning the final 3-0. We believe this is the first time that the first and second place has come from the same school.

In the girls' division, our team led by Matilda O'Donoghue sailed brilliantly to make it into the finals and after a close final lost to Fahan 2 to 1 which saw them place second overall.

Well done to all our sailors on a fantastic achievement!

Athletics Carnival Gallery

Please enjoy this gallery of images, all taken by the talented Steven Shen (Year 12) of the recent Clemes Athletics Carnival.

We also have this image gallery taken at the High School Athletics Carnival, held in the last week of Term 3. At this carnival, our Under 13 High Jump Record was broken by Sean Bader (Year 7). Sean jumped a height of 1.57 metres. Great work, Sean!

Many sports have been coming to a close this term with Friends' teams involved in many finals across different sports. Our girls' teams, in particular, have been playing wonderfully well, with our Year 7/8 Girls Hockey team winning 6-1 in their final against Fahan.

Sculling Skills Program

Our Sculling Skills program for Year 6 students ran during the first week of the school holidays at Cornelian Bay. Coached by the Senior Friends' rowers, this program aims to develop sculling skills and to give young students a chance to have a go at rowing in a safe environment, hopefully encouraging them to join the Friends' rowing program next year.

If you want to know more about the sculling skills program, or rowing at The Friends' School in general, please email our Head of Rowing, Anthony Edwards at aedwards@friends.tas.edu.au.
