Year 11 IB Theatre

As part of the International Baccalaureate  (IB) Theatre course, the students began work on Caryl Churchill’s Love & Information in Term 1. We placed this project on hold while we were on Distance Learning and then were able to resume our work this term. The play is a collection of seemingly disconnected scenes but as the piece unfolds the audience is invited to think more deeply about how humans communicate. The students developed a directorial through-line that focused on relationships and each played over 30 different characters throughout the show. This collaborative undertaking prepares the class for the Collaborative Project in Year 12; an original piece of theatre is developed from a chosen starting point, and the class are responsible for all performance and production elements of their show.

TCE Theatre Performance

In a usual year, Year 12 students studying Theatre Performance would perform two full-length shows. At the time we moved to Distance Learning the class were two weeks from opening night of Moises Kaufman and the Tectonic Theater Project’s The Laramie Project and it was felt that all that developmental work, line learning and research could not go to waste and we would return to this script once school resumed. Here we are at the end of Term 3, in the last few dress rehearsals preparing for performances in the first week of Term 4. The COVID-19 restriction will limit our audience but the students are looking forward to finally presenting their work to family, friends and the TASC marking panel. The Laramie Project is an important text, based on interviews with the people of Laramie, Wyoming by the New York based Tectonic Theatre Company, following a violent hate crime in their community. The incident drew worldwide attention in 1998 and led to law reform in many states in the US. The students each play four or five characters and share this story in what is referred to as verbatim theatre style - the words of actual people being spoken by the actors.

Mid Year Art Exhibition

Our TCE & IB art students displayed their mid-year exam artwork in The Farrall Centre foyer in August. There were some amazing artworks from talented students on show. We can't wait to see their final exam work!

Twilight Music Concert

On Wednesday 23 September the School was fortunate to be able to hold the UTAS/IB Twilight Music Concert and Singing Soirée, featuring a number of senior Music students and choirs from Years 7 to 12.  All the performances throughout the night were absolutely stunning, with the audience enthralled with pieces of delicate beauty and rousing character.

One particular highlight was the premiere of Reflection by the Waves, a piece for solo piano written by Year 12 IB Music student, Sarah Jack, and performed by superb Hobart musician, Jennifer Marten-Smith. Thank you to all the performers for such a wonderful evening.

Dance with the Sydney Dance Company

In mid-September, our Year 9 dance students were very fortunate to have a Zoom contemporary dance class with Sydney Dance Company. The students learnt a lot about contemporary dance technique from some amazing dancers and got to have a lot of fun in the process.

Friends' offers dance as a curricular subject from Years 7 - 12, with students developing their technical and expressive abilities and refining their choreographic skills.

Object Design

In September, examiners were marking the TCE Object Design work set up in The Farrall Centre.

Object Design is a fantastic way for students to flex their creative muscles and create some truly unique pieces.
