2023 College Captains

During our Secondary Assembly the Student Representative Council for 2023 was announced. I would like to take this opportunity to acknowledge all the Year 11 students who nominated for Student Representative Council (SRC) positions for next year. It is a wonderful indication of the future of the College that so many of our students wish to undertake leadership positions.

The College has created a new position on the SRC for 2023 – a Wellbeing Captain. This initiative reflects the College’s ongoing commitment to best practice in the education and support of our students.

The names of all our 2023 Student Leaders are below and we would again like to express our congratulations to them all. I am confident this team will make a significant contribution and positively influence the College over the next 12 months.

2022 Visual Arts Exhibition

The 2022 Visual Arts Exhibition was officially opened on Monday 17 October by special alumni guest and College parent, Elizabeth Richards. Liz attended the College in the mid 1980’s and went on to study Fine Arts and Graphic Design. Now she works as a full time Visual Artist creating impressive photo realistic oil paintings. In her opening address, Liz emphasised the importance of the Visual Arts  in providing a great sense of joy and self-worth and in developing essential life skills such as creative problem solving and visual communication.

The Visual Arts Exhibition provides our students with the opportunity to showcase their artworks and be recognised for the time and effort they have dedicated to their Art studies this year. Congratulations to our talented Art students and wonderful Visual Arts staff for an outstanding exhibition. If you haven’t had the chance to view the exhibition it will be open on Saturday from 11am until 2pm, where you can vote for your favourite secondary artwork for the People’s Choice Award.

SPORT

Sport Awards Night

On Tuesday 18 October we celebrated the sporting achievements of our secondary students. It was an outstanding night where all students involved are to be commended for their exceptional representation of Sport. Thank you to our compere for the evening, Mr John Towsend a former John XXIII student and current parent, he lead the night with knowledge and a fantastic sense of humour. We were delighted to have Aran Zalewski, Captain of the Kookaburras Australian Hockey Team as our guest speaker who provided inspirational messages to our students. One in particular that really struck a chord was the importance of making the choice to work hard in all you do when opportunities present themself.

Other highlights of the evening included our student panel. The focus of the panel was NAS sport and it was wonderful to listen the student experience and how much NAS gives them. NAS is the biggest sub-association group in the ACC with 77 teams and we love seeing the kids representing the College to their absolute best. We had a special video celebrating students some of our many students who have represented WA in their sport at State and National levels.

Congratulations to all the students on their fabulous achievements and sporting participation throughout another amazing year of sport. Keep working hard to reach your goals!!

NAS Sport

Summer NAS will run this term in a One-Day Carnival format. Due to the short term NAS schools agreed on this format for Years 7-10 NAS. This means students will play all the other NAS schools in the one day with the hope of bringing home the premiers flag. All students who trialed for teams earlier in the year and last term please see your year level notice for lists. If there are any questions or queries or you are unable to be part of the team anymore please email or come and see myself or Mrs Kolka know by Friday 21 October.

Congratulations

Congratulations to Josh McGlew, Taj Dorrington and Eli Zuvela who represented WA at the Under 13s national hockey tournament in Hobart. Josh McGlew and Taj Dorrington (WA Storm) and Eli Zuvela (WA Lightning). All States and territories were represented at the tournament with a total of 12 teams competing across the week. Both WA boys teams were very competitive across the tournament with WA Lightning registering 8 wins; 1 loss; 2 draws taking out silver, and WA Storm recording 8 wins; 2 losses and 1 draw to come away with bronze.

Well done to Emily Murdoch who competed in the State Water Polo in Queensland over the holidays. She was also selected as part of the National Squad, the only WA player. A fantastic achievement, well done!
