Magis report

Our College Chess Tournament commenced on Monday, with students from Years 7-12, along with the top players from our Primary School, competing for the title of College Grandmaster. They say ‘a picture is worth a thousand words’ – well, these pictures certainly show how close and tense some of these games were. Well done to all students who took part and congratulations to those students who are progressing to Round 2 of the Tournament. Special thanks to Mr Connellan for his unwavering support and assistance.

Good luck to our World Scholars! They will be competing in the Perth Round of the World Scholars Cup at Aquinas College today and at Sacred Heart College tomorrow. Our teams will be researching, discussing, and debating science, art, music, history, literature, and more. We look forward to hearing about their experience at the competition in next week’s newsletter.

It is always wonderful to witness our senior school students demonstrate our College values through their leadership and mentoring of our lower school students. Year 10 students Gemma Bailey and Meg Cleary visited one of the Year 7 Magis Option classes yesterday. Gemma and Meg are one half of our hugely successful Senior Ethics Team, who came 3rd in the International Ethics Olympiad Final earlier this year. The Year 7 students were excited to receive advice and encouragement from these Magis leaders, as our lower school students will be taking part in a junior version of Ethics Olympiad, next week.

At yesterday’s Day of Invitation, we heard from Mr Henderson, the College Principal, who spoke about the baton of leadership passing from our talented Year 12 students to our Year 11 cohort. I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate our Magis Captain, Genevieve Fergusson-Allen, on the outstanding way she has managed her leadership role this year – and congratulate Year 11 student, Daniel Doran on his appointment as Magis Captain for 2023.

I would like to thank all Year 12 students who have been involved in Magis activities during their time at the College – from House challenges to global gifted and talented competitions. These students have played an enormous part in the development of our Magis program. In particular, I would like to acknowledge our Y12 Magis Committee members - Samantha Eastman, Genevieve Fergusson-Allen, Timothy Gardner, James Green and Natalie Ong – for their terrific contribution, and commitment to Magis. They have been exceptional role models for our students, and I wish them all the very best with their future endeavours. May the spirit of Magis (doing more) continue to guide them, always.

Our annual Magis Awards Breakfast will be held next Thursday at 7:30am in the Thomas More Exhibition Centre. I look forward to celebrating the achievements of our Magis students and acknowledging the superb contribution of Mr Miller to the Magis program. Invitations have been sent out to Award winners, but we extend the invite to all members of the College community who wish to show their support for our Magis students.
