Performing Arts News

Performing Arts Festival for Catholic Schools & Colleges in Western Australia was established to help the students of Catholic schools and colleges experience the spirit and tradition of the performing arts.

The Festival seeks to provide students with specific ‘performance platforms’ where they have the unique opportunity to give of their very best and perform to a public audience. Open to both primary and secondary school students, the performance categories encompass choral, drama, musical, instrumental, vocal and dance aspects of the performing arts. Approximately 18,000 students enter the festival each year, and the performances take place in Term 3. The emphasis is on nurturing the arts and giving a ‘best possible’ performance, rather than on competition between schools.

OLA has entered every year group from Year 1 to Year 6, so that our students will have the opportunity to perform publicly, and receive constructive feedback from an adjudicator. The following are the sections in which our students will perform:

Year 1              Class Choirs

Year 2              Choral Verse

Year 3              Class Choirs

Year 4              Liturgical Choirs

Year 5              Excerpt from a Musical (Matilda)

Year 6              Liturgical Choir

Year 6              Recorder Club (20 volunteers drawn from both classes)

We will keep you informed of our progress as the term goes by. Good luck to all our entrants and their teachers.

Instrumental Tuition Term 3

If your child receives instrumental tuition at OLA, the tutors will be in contact directly with you to schedule lessons for the term. We currently offer tuition in piano, drums, violin, flute and guitar. Later this term, our guitar tutor, Luke Gallagher, will be going to Nashville USA to play some gigs, and continue to develop his professional and personal contact with some of the ‘greats’ of his industry. During his absence, his pupils will be coached by Joe Simich, who has already worked with our students. All our tutors (and any replacements) are highly skilled in music as well as in pedagogy, and have up to date Working With Children checks.  For further information, please feel free to call to the Music Room, or email me at mary.mcauliffe@cewa.edu.au
